The 4-½-trillion-dollar contract (The Holcroft Covenant) is a British thriller by John Frankenheimer from the year 1985 . The plot is based on the novel The Holcroft Treaty (original title: The Holcroft-covenant ) by Robert Ludlum .
action
The New York architect Noel Holcroft learns that his father - during the Second World War, a general and for Adolf Hitler operating financial expert - 4.5 billion dollars left, which were deposited in order to compensate the victims of the Nazi regime. Together with two other sons of the Nazi generals, Holcroft is supposed to help distribute the money, and the three men are supposed to sign a contract in Geneva .
Holcroft gets to know the future contract partner Johann von Tiebolt and his sister Helden. During his travels in Europe, Holcroft is the target of several attacks; the perpetrators try to kidnap heroes. Holcroft spends a night of love with Heroes.
Holcroft's mother and a man friend of her are murdered. Holcroft tells Heroes about this and realizes she knows details he didn't mention. Heroes are later seen assuring their brother that Holcroft is not suspicious. It turns out that the siblings are lovers.
Holcroft states that the money should really be used to rebuild Nazi rule. Johann von Tiebolt is to act as the new leader. Holcroft organizes a press conference after the contract is signed and exposes the man. Von Tiebolt draws his gun and shoots the third contract partner, a musician. He then fights with Holcroft until he is shot with his own gun.
Holcroft speaks to Hero, whom he reveals that he sees through her. He knows that the kidnapping is only being faked. He repeats several times that he loved heroes. Hero shoots himself, causing Holcroft to cry.
Reviews
Film-Dienst wrote that the film was a “ technically professionally staged agent story ”, which, however, relied on the “ superficial, occasionally speculative tension ” at the expense of “ credibility and character drawing ”.
Cinema magazine criticized the plot as "limping" .
Awards
John Frankenheimer was nominated for a prize at the Italian festival Mystfest in 1985.
background
The film was shot in London , Lindau , Berlin and Twickenham Film Studios in England . He was brought in the United States in about 70 theaters where he around 394,000 US dollars grossed.
The electronic musician Cio D'Or , who worked as a dancer in Berlin in the 80s, took part in the film as a dancer.
The German film title is based on a translation error - the amount left behind was "4.5 billion US dollars" , or 4.5 billion US dollars . This mistake was carried through the entire film, which is why we always talk about "4.5 trillion dollars" and not 4.5 billion dollars.
