Cio D'Or , actually Cio Dorbandt (* 1958 ) is a German DJ , percussionist, music producer and sound designer in the electronic music scene. Stylistically she moves between hypnotic minimal techno , dub techno and cinematoscopic ambient using processed field recordings, orchestral compositions and self-developed sounds.

Life

From 1982 to 1985 Cio D'Or studied modern dance (Graham technique) , ballet and choreography at the Etage in Berlin and danced for André Heller's Fall Through Dreams and for John Frankenheimer's film The 4 1/2 Billion Dollar Contract (engl . The Holcroft Covenant) .

Cio D'Or started in 2001 as a resident DJ in the former Munich club Ultraschall , played in Richard Bartz 's crank tour and was listed in the female: pressure database by Electric Indigo . In 2002 and 2003 she traveled to Sinai / Egypt and worked out her first musical ideas with mini discs and an Akai MPC 2000 . She learned to produce music self-taught . Musical role models were initially Brian Eno and David Byrne for their modern dance choreographies.

In 2003 and 2004, Cio D'Or organized the two-month party series Nachtwind in the Munich clubs Woandersclub and Harry Klein . During this time she produced her first track and her first EP Hokus Pokus . She then made international appearances.

Between 2004 and 2015 Cio D'Or released a number of EPs on the labels Kurb , Treibstoff , Karmarouge , Motoguzzi , Broque , Time To Express , Prologue , Semantica and Telrae , collaborated with electronic musicians such as Donato Dozzy, Gabriel Ananda and Paul Brtschitsch and worked their first remix . In 2010, Resident Advisor Cio D'Or was one of the top 100 DJs and placed her in 64th place. At the end of 2011 she stopped her performances for the time being.

In 2011 the two magnetic flux EPs appeared. The De: bug characterized Cio D'Ors music of the period as "clicks without cuts, contemporary techno without end-time depression, areas without lard, Hall without glitter."

In 2012, Cio D'Or turned stylistically in the direction of ambient and dub techno with their EP Ur / Uhr , released on the Telrae label . In 2013 she began to perform again, a year later she stopped them. During this time she produced theater music for the first time.

At the Pocket Opera Festival 2013 in Salzburg, directed by Thierry Bruehl, Cio D'Or represented the work Distance for ensemble and tape, which is based on a photo of the beach in Lampedusa showing two deceased refugees covered with towels and themselves in the background showing sunning tourists. The work tells a fictional story about the photo. Synthetic and percussive sounds are accompanied by live instruments such as piano, cello, viola and double bass.

The work Distance was the starting point and basis of a remix workshop for the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia, lectured by Maya Consuelo Sternel and Angelika Lepper , in which material from Cio D'Or was remixed by the participants.

In 2014 Cio D'Or collaborated with Brigitta Muntendorf , the musician Florian Zwissler, the Ensemble Garage , the choreographer Claudia Lichtblau and the dancer Matthias Hartmann for the project PULSA: RE , which is a synthesis of electronic music, new music and dance.
