Prophecy is an American horror film directed by John Frankenheimer that was produced in 1979.

action

Deforestation is being carried out in the forests of an Indian reservation in Maine to obtain raw materials for a paper mill. Some woodcutters are killed, and two rescue teams are missing. At first the Indians are suspected of having passive resistance to the deforestation of their home forest. The physician Dr. Robert Verne travels to Maine with his wife Maggie to conduct environmental studies in the area. He discovers horribly disfigured, mutated animals and finally finds out the cause of the excessive growth of the creatures: methylmercury , which is used as a bleaching agent in the nearby paper mill and then disposed of in the environment. This mutagen turns a bear into a five-meter-tall, murderous monster that eventually chases the Verne and some Indians through the woods. At Verne's log cabin on the lake, there is a fight with the beast. The Indian spokesman John Hawks and his father, the tribal elder, pay for this with their lives. But Robert Verne finally manages to hunt down the monster with an arrow.

Reviews

Vincent Canby wrote in the New York Times (June 15, 1979) that the screenwriter was making a weak attempt to reuse a well-known film formula. The film looks majestic, especially because of the camera work. The soundtrack reinforces this effect.

The lexicon of international films said: “ Plump horror film with a poor direction and a miserable script. The ecological topic is a mere pretext for tension and shock effects ”.

The television magazine TV Spielfilm judged: " Well meant and monstrously unsuccessful ".
