The striped scarab beetle ( Sitona lineatus ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae). In some regions it is considered a pest on broad beans and peas .

features

The beetles reach a body length of four to five millimeters. They are brown to black in color and covered with copper, gray-green, yellowish or brownish scales. There is very fine and short hair between the scales. On the neck plate are three dark longitudinal lines and on the cover wings ( elytra ) extend alternately dark and light stripes. But there are also individuals who only have a single, dark body color. The legs and antennae are yellow to reddish brown in color, the club and whip of the antennae are occasionally a little darker. The trunk begins to narrow at the level of the compound eyes and has parallel edges at its tip. The pronotum is wider than the head at eye level, but is visibly constricted just behind the front edge. It is widest in the middle.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are found in the Palearctic , in the north to central Scandinavia and also on the British Isles . They were introduced into North America . They live in fields and meadows from the lowlands to high altitudes. They are mainly found on peas from May to July , on which both adults and larvae feed. The females lay their eggs at the base of the plants. The larvae live underground at the roots, the nocturnal adults eat arc-shaped holes in the edges of the leaves. They usually occur in one generation per year, and in some there are two.
