Irving Glassberg (born October 1, 1906 in Warsaw , Russian Empire ; † September 9, 1958 in Los Angeles ) was a Russian-Polish-born American cameraman .

Live and act

Glassberg came to the United States as a child and learned his photographic craft in Hollywood in the late 1920s. With the dawn of the sound film age, at the beginning of the 1930s, Glassberg was first proven to be a camera assistant in the service of First National Pictures . In 1931 he moved to Warner Bros. and worked in the same role in the legendary classic gangster film The Public Enemy with James Cagney . The following year, Glassberg was allowed to participate in The Midnight Patrol for the first time as co-responsible cameraman in the creation of a film. In 1935 Irving Glassberg moved up to become a simple cameraman (so-called camera operator) and remained in this position until the early post-war period.

Irving Glassberg was only able to photograph films regularly as head cameraman since he was 40. During the remaining decade of his life, the native of Warsaw shot an abundance of B-Pictures (54 films in just twelve years!) On behalf of Universal International Pictures , mainly westerns, but also crime novels, adventure stories and dramas, but hardly any comedies. His best-known works include Anthony Mann's western classic Mutiny on the Serpent River with James Stewart , the knight film The Iron Knight of Falworth , the horror story Behind the Walls of Horror with Charles Laughton and Boris Karloff, and the Douglas-Sirk melodrama Duel in the Clouds .

In 1958, the year he died, Glassberg moved to the tiny Canon Productions company. Glassberg died, not yet 52 years old, in the middle of the shooting of the Canon crime film In den Klauen der Unterwelt ; his work, which only premiered in August 1959, was completed by his colleague Philip H. Lathrop .
