action

Logan Stewart is a man who runs goods, mules and gold dust business here today and there tomorrow. In 1856 he is with Lucy Overmire to accompany her to his best friend, the banker George Camrose, to whom she is engaged. When the two of them are staying at the Portland Hotel, he is able to prevent him from being robbed at the last minute by letting the brutal lad get acquainted with his fists. Logan tells Lucy that he suspects that the bandit Honey Bragg tried to rob him. Logan is convinced that Bragg also has two miners on his conscience whose killing is attributed to the local Indians . Bragg knows that Logan thinks he is the culprit, which is another reason for him to get Logan out of the way. On their way to Jacksonville, where they and Bragg are at home, they both stop at the ranch owned by Ben Dance and his family. The family's foster daughter Caroline is very happy because she has taken Logan into her heart for a long time. He gives the young woman a medallion. Lucy later mocks, since she can't imagine he has serious intentions towards Caroline.

In Jacksonville everything is going on as usual, Camrose has plenty of people in his bank and could be a rich man if he wasn't drawn to the gaming table again and again , which few people know. Lucy, who doesn't know the extent of his gambling addiction , blames her fiancé, but otherwise takes the problem lightly. Caroline and Logan meet again at a ceremony. Although the young woman fears whether she will be able to cope with the unsteady life that Logan leads, she confesses her love for him. When he asks her for her hand, she happily agrees, not realizing that he loves Lucy, who is taboo for him because she is one of his best friends. When Vane Blazier hears that Caroline and Logan want to get married, he reacts jealous and hurt because he genuinely loves the young woman.

The next day, Logan clashes with Bragg again, whose insolent behavior ends in a fight between the two men, at the end of which Bregg is utterly defeated. Shortly thereafter, Camrose turns to Logan and confesses that he has lost large sums of money at the gaming table, which could bring his entire existence to collapse and that he is also afraid of losing Lucy. Logan promises his friend to help him out with a loan, but he has to promise to quit playing poker . Camrose makes the promise to his friend, but secretly keeps playing. When he owes a large sum to the professional player Lestrade, he tries to hook up with his wife Marta. When that doesn't help either, he takes hold of the gold dust deposited with him by the miner MacIvar and kills the man when the latter surprisingly demands his property back. Camrose now wants to leave Jacksonville as soon as possible, having previously married Lucy. The young woman and her family want a big wedding. Lucy rides with Logan to San Francisco to buy the wedding dress that is right for her. Before they leave, Logan implores Lestrade to return the money illegally confiscated from his friend, otherwise he will get to know him. Lestrade then hires Bragg to kill Logan. Bragg, who can't get over his defeat to Logan and would like to be rid of him anyway, is particularly happy to take on this assignment and rides behind them. Blind with rage, he shoots when he spots Lucy and Logan, but only hits their horses. Despite the adverse circumstances, both make it back to Jacksonville, where they learn that Camrose has been arrested for the murder of MacIvar. When Logan learns that his friend is about to be lynched that night , he frees him from prison to hide him in the woods. At the same time, Indians invade Jacksonville. They want revenge because Bragg violated one of their young women and then killed her. They did not spare Ben Dance's farm either, and the farmer and his son Asa were killed in their attack. Caroline has disappeared without a trace. Logan tells George that he should try to escape and start again somewhere else and then goes in search of Caroline, whom he finds completely dazed in a forest. Some time later she confesses to him that he is not the right person for her, that she needs someone like Vane, who is sedentary and can give her the security she needs. Logan's business was also destroyed in the Indian attack, which hits him less deeply than the fact that George was captured again and subsequently killed by the population. Logan is sure that he can build up his business again, because now Lucy is at his side, with her he is not afraid of the step into a new life.

Production and Background

The shooting lasted from mid-August to mid-December 1945. In the Los Angeles Times it was read that in addition to the studio recordings, outdoor shots were shot in the area around Diamond Lake in Oregon , as well as in the area around Medford . The film was produced by Universal Pictures Company , Inc. and Walter Wanger Pictures, Inc., Universal also sold Fire on the Horizon . The budget for the film was $ 2.6 million. Canyon Passage had its world premiere on July 15, 1946 in Portland . On July 26, 1946, it was then generally shown in cinemas in the United States. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the film was released on February 6, 1953, and on November 4, 1972, it was broadcast for the first time on the ARD television program. Canyon Passage was also presented in 1997 at the Locarno International Film Festival , where one of the themes was “50 Years of American Film”.

Ernest Haycox 'novel, on which the film plot is based, was first published in mid-January to early March 1945 in the Saturday Evening Post . According to an article in the Los Angeles Examiner from February 1945, Walter Wanger's request was originally to have John Wayne , Thomas Mitchell and Claire Trevor star in Fire on the Horizon , after they had already played in the western Ringo produced by Wanger , which is also based on a Haycox novel based, had great success. According to a note in the New York Times , consideration was given to recruiting Robert Siodmak as a director. Even Stuart Heisler or George Marshall Wanger would have liked for his direction. For Jacques Tourneur it was his first color film and at the same time the film with the largest budget. Tourneur, son of well-respected French director Maurice Tourneur , previously directed B-movies and short films before making a name for himself directing stylish 1940s horror films, including Cat People and I Followed a Zombie (1943). According to his biographer Matthew Bernstein, this film is said to have been Wanger's most successful post-war production. Wanger left Universal after this film and Tourneur went back to RKO , where he made arguably the greatest film of his career: Golden Poison (1947).

According to Daily Variety , British actress Patricia Roc made her American debut in this film. It was loaned from Universal and Universal got Jean Arthur for it . In an article in the Saturday Evening Post , the composer Hoagy Carmichael was quoted as saying that the role of Hi Linnet was the best of his career.

criticism

Time Out said that the film's unevenness and its leaps and bounds are characteristic of Tourneur. Above all, his talent for directing should be emphasized in terms of the expressiveness of the images, the way his characters give an unexpected delicacy of emotions and create coherence. This is not so much a film for western fans as it is for creative artists and those with a penchant for the “pastor's egg” (“curate's eggs” , which means that something is partly good, partly bad).

Dennis Schwartz from Movie Reviews summarized his criticism of the film as follows: It is a great film with great ideas, great actors and a first-class director. It was one of those great westerns that resembled John Ford's top works, but which for some inexplicable reason was undeservedly neglected.

The lexicon of international films spoke of an “action-packed Western with tension and feeling” that was “above the average of the genre”.

Awards

In 1947 , Hoagy Carmichael and Jack Brooks were nominated for an Oscar in the "Best Song" category with their composition Ole Buttermilk Sky , which, however, went to Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer and the song On the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe from The Harvey Girls went.
