Stanley C. Ridges (born July 17, 1890 in Southampton , England - † April 22, 1951 in Westbrook , Connecticut ) was a British - American actor who was a well-known and eclectic actor on Broadway and in the 1920s and 1940s Films occurred.

life and career

Stanley Ridges found his way into acting when he became protégé of the theater star Beatrice Lillie in England. He had his first role in London in the play O'Boy . After moving to the United States, he played his first role on New York's Broadway in November 1917 in Six Months' Option . The Briton made a name for himself as a romantic lover on Broadway, where Ridges appeared in a total of 18 productions by 1936. He had made his first film, Success , in 1923, but it was only when he appeared alongside Claude Rains in the crime film Crimes Without Passion that his film career took off. While he still appeared as a hero in Crimes Without Passion , he had to be content with character roles in his subsequent films because of his gray hair. In Hollywood he was able to develop a good reputation as a performer of various supporting characters in films such as A Charming Villain or Fear of Death at Every Twilight . In general, despite his origins, he rarely played British.

Until the year of his death, Ridges played in almost 60 films, such as the Nazi spy Professor Siletsky in Ernst Lubitsch's classic comedy Sein oder nicht sein (1942) or as Major Buxton in the Oscar-winning biopic Sergeant York (1941) directed by Howard Hawks . He had one of his biggest and best film roles alongside Boris Karloff in the horror film Black Friday as an actually lovable professor who, after an accident, turned into a kind of schizophrenicDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 'personality. Ridges also appeared in a number of films as a military officer during World War II. Towards the end of his life he made several appearances on emerging television. One of his last roles was as the friendly mentor of a young doctor ( Sidney Poitier ) in the racial drama Hatred is Blind (1950).

Stanley Ridges died in Connecticut in 1951 at the age of 60.
