Ernest Haycox

Ernest James Haycox (born October 1, 1899 in Portland , Oregon , † October 13, 1950 there ) was an American writer ( Western ).

Life

Haycox was the son of William James Haycox and his wife Martha Burghardt. He completed his school days in Oregon and Washington State .

In 1915, Haycox volunteered for the United States Army and was transferred to the Mexican border the following year to guard it. In 1917/1918 Haycox fought in Europe and was only able to return to the USA after the end of the war (→ Armistice of Compiègne ).

In 1923 Haycox attended Reed College in his hometown and then studied journalism at the University of Oregon . His first literary attempts were accompanied by his lecturer William Franklin Goodwin Thatcher († 1972).

Haycox died twelve days after his 51st birthday on October 13, 1950 and found his final resting place in his hometown of Portland. He had been married to Jill M. Chord since 1925 and had two children with her.

reception

Haycox wrote over 20 novels and well over 300 short stories. He made his debut in the early twenties with publications in pulp magazines . From 1930 it could be read regularly in magazines like Collier’s and newspapers like The Saturday Evening Post . Among its enthusiastic readers was u. a. also Ernest Hemingway , who was often enthusiastic about Haycox's work. In 2005, Haycox was named "One of the 24 Best Western Writers of the 20th Century" by the Western Writers of America .

Some of Haycox's short stories and novels were congenially filmed. The western Ringo by John Ford , based on a Haycox story, is considered an important classic in film history.
