action

Eric Stanton has to get off an intercity bus because he doesn't have enough money for the ticket. He is thrown out of the vehicle in a small town and spends the night in a nearby pub. A number of people are already waiting for the arrival of the attractive waitress Stella, including the former policeman Mark Judd. A short time later, Stella appears. Soon after the encounter, Eric accepts a job as an assistant to Professor Madley, a supposed fortune teller. His first act is to visit the old youthful Clara Mills, the daughter of the former mayor. There he meets Clara's younger sister, the very pretty June Mills. June is taken with Eric on the spot and helps convince Clare to visit Professor Madley. On the occasion, Eric also learns of the well-organized finances of the Mills sisters, who have considerable wealth from an inheritance.

In the meantime, Eric pursues Stella with his intentions, but the young woman does not want to marry him until he can offer her a home. Spurred on by greed and lust, Eric tries everything in his power to make money. He makes a plan to marry the inexperienced June and cheat out of her inheritance. At the same time, Stella has no inhibitions about being held up by other men. Eric hastily marries June on a visit to San Francisco to confront Clara with a fait accompli. On their wedding night, Eric visits Stella and assures her that his marriage is only a sham marriage, but she does not believe him and rejects him. Clara overhears their argument.

The next morning June confronts Eric. He wants to defend himself, but in the meantime he is wanted for the murder of Stella. After first interviewing a few other suspects, policeman Mark Judd claims that Eric is the killer. Eric and June flee. In the end, the real killer is discovered: Mark Judd murdered Stella out of jealousy. Eric and June look forward to a happy future.

background

Alice Faye was 20th Century Fox's most significant female star until the early 1940s . It owes its popularity to appearances in expensive musicals such as Tin Pan Ally , Alexander's Ragtime Band and Springtime in the Rockies . With the advent of Betty Grable , however, her status was on the wane, and there were almost uninterrupted arguments with the studio boss Darryl F. Zanuck . The two sides were initially unable to agree on a new film project for months. The final choice fell on Fallen Angel , the film adaptation of a bestseller by Marty Holland, which also wrote The File by Thelma Jordan . Alice Faye was persuaded to finally take on a dramatic role, but couldn't get along with Otto Preminger at all . The shooting was unfriendly and in the end there was a scandal . Faye saw the final cut of the film and was convinced that her role had been downsized considerably at the expense of Linda Darnell . In addition, some of her best scenes have been cut out. The actress was reportedly so angry that she got in her car and never returned to the studio.

Reviews

At its premiere, the film received only mixed reviews. Only later was it discovered as a major work of film noir . The film was compared to its disadvantage with Laura , whom Preminger brought to the screen with Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney in 1944.

  • The filmdienst described the film years later than one
"film noir" carried by excellent actors, which uses the cynicism inherent in the genre to make the dark side of human passions transparent; excellently staged and photographed.
