action

The creative director of an advertising agency, Eddie Anderson, lives in a luxury villa with his wife Florence and their adopted daughter. He is very successful professionally and can afford a carefree life. It is all the more surprising that he throws himself in front of a passing truck. He is admitted to a clinic where he suddenly loses his speech. He reminisces about his previous life in his mind, remembers his reputation in society and the people he has met. But he does not find a phase in his life in which he was really happy. Almost none, because he had found happiness in a previous hot affair with Gwen ... and then lost it again, because he then had scruples and stayed with his wife. It is the negative balance of a man who wants to undo certain weak points in his life.

When he is physically healthy again and can leave the hospital, his previous approach to life and its principles have changed. He realized that he had been wasting his energy on trivial matters for years. He breaks all bridges behind him and moves to live with his seriously ill father in New York. He sees Gwen again, who meanwhile has a child and lives with a friend without loving him. Eddie can't forget her. There is a row with the family because they want his money. Florence shows up with him with a lawyer and a psychiatrist. But he firmly rejects her request to return to her. He felt constricted in his marriage to her and he doesn't want to experience that again. His mental state deteriorates and he is admitted to a mental hospital. He is only released after the death of his father. Gwen is waiting for him and goes to the funeral with him.

Reviews

  • "A drama staged by a heavy hand ... Despite the top-class cast, a flop that never really took off." (Lothar R. Just: Heyne Filmlexikon 1999)
  • “In 'The Arrangement', Kazan's deep doubts about America's affluent society are manifested. Personal experiences are reflected in the antihero Eddie, who in his struggle for self-realization cannot withstand the social and moral pressure and begins to revolt against the establishment. "( Thomas Koebner : Filmregisseure. Reclam 1999)
  • “Kazan's film adaptation of his own bestseller novel describes, autobiographically influenced, problems of the second generation of immigrants in the USA. The story is rather superficial, the staging is melodramatic, the cast is good and expensive. ”( Lexicon of International Films )
