The fictional, dialogue-intensive drama picks up on topics such as currency devaluation and the dispute between the proponents of a European customs union and skeptics who doubt the project's benefits for the welfare and size of the country.

action

Former Council President Beaufort lives on his country estate, where he dictates his memoirs to his secretary Millerand and receives a friendly visit from the British Prime Minister. As newspapers and television spread rumors that aspiring politician Chalamont would be appointed as the next prime minister, he recalls his active days.

In an economic crisis, he decided to devalue money in a narrow circle to which Chalamont belonged. But someone used his knowledge advantage to make 3 billion francs profit to the detriment of the republic with speculative transactions. Chalamont confessed to telling his wife, who belongs to a banking family, about the government's measures. Beaufort forced him to sign a confession of guilt, which he took without ever publishing it. In a fiery speech to the council, he named all the members of the parliament who pretended to represent the interests of the people, but were in fact associated with companies, and resigned from office. Now he burns the document so that it does not fall into the wrong hands if Chalamont should come to power. Then he lets Chalamont come to him at night, berates him for his character and threatens to publish it if he should accept the proposed office. Chalamont gives up.

backgrounds

The President premiered on March 1, 1961. The German-language premiere was on July 28, 1961. An earlier German-language version only lasts approx. 95 minutes, the version shown on ARTE on August 31, 2020 lasts 110 minutes, like the original. The differences are clearly audible because the dubbing was done by other actors.

Reviews

“A democratic teaching and dialogue piece with convincing actors. The main character bears the features of the former French Foreign Minister Aristide Briand . "
