Kevin Jarre (born August 6, 1954 in Detroit , Michigan , † April 3, 2011 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Jarre's mother, actress Laura Devon , moved from Detroit to Los Angeles in the early 1960s . From 1962 to 1966 she was married to Brian Kelly , who took over the role of father and with whom he temporarily lived in Wyoming after the divorce of his parents . In 1967 his mother married the film composer Maurice Jarre , who adopted Kevin . This made him the step-brother of the musician Jean-Michel Jarre and the production designer Stéfanie Jarre .

In 1985 he wrote the story for Rambo II - The Assignment , which was scripted by Sylvester Stallone and James Cameron . Together they were awarded the Golden Raspberry for Worst Screenplay the following year . Jarre has been fascinated by the Civil War , particularly the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, since childhood . After years of research, the historical drama Glory , based on true events, was created in 1989 based on his script , which was awarded three Oscars . He was nominated for both the Golden Globe Award and the Writers Guild of America Award in 1990, but could not win any of the awards.

In 1993 he worked on another period drama, Tombstone , about the legendary OK Corral shooting . Jarre actually wanted to direct his script himself as a director and produce it together with Kevin Costner . Due to differences of opinion, Costner finally produced Wyatt Earp - The Life of a Legend at the same time . Among other things, the resulting competition and differences in the length of the script led to problems when shooting Tombstone , due to which Jarre was replaced by director George P. Cosmatos only a few scenes with Charlton Heston after the shooting .

In 1997 Jarre wrote the screenplay for the thriller Confident Enemy, starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt . In the same year he produced the remake The Jackal with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth . His last Hollywood work was the adventure film The Mummy , for which he worked as executive producer and dramaturge.

Jarre succumbed to heart failure at the age of 56 .
