The Dinosaurs were an American rock band formed in 1982 . The Dinosaurs are the only supergroup to emerge from the Bay Area psychedelic rock scene around San Francisco .

The original members were Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company , John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service , Papa John Creach of Hot Tuna , Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane , Robert Hunter of Grateful Dead , Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish and the Bay Area musician Merl Saunders .

In 1988 the band released their only studio album, Dinosaurs . In 2005 an album with old recordings was released, Friends of Extinction .
