Merl Saunders

Merl Saunders (also Merle Saunders , born February 14, 1934 in San Mateo , California , † October 24, 2008 ) was an American organist .

He grew up in San Francisco in the immediate vicinity of the Haight / Ashbury district. His musical roots are in jazz and rock. He has worked with Harry Belafonte , Lionel Hampton , Miles Davis , BB King , Paul Butterfield , Mike Bloomfield , Papa John Creach , Bonnie Raitt and Jerry García . He had a long-standing friendship with the latter, from which various publications arose since 1969. Despite his close association with the Grateful Dead , he only performed three times with the band. Since the late 1980s, Saunders has been increasingly committed to environmental policy.
