Rob Barraco

Rob Barraco (* on Long Island , New York ) is an American keyboardist who plays primarily for rock , folk rock and psychedelic rock bands.

Life

Barraco learned to play keyboard and guitar at the age of 6 . In 1978 he completed his music studies at the State University of New York , New Paltz, with a bachelor's degree and taught music theory at the Great Neck Music Center, a music college on Long Island .

In 1984 Barraco was hired as a show musician for the then new TV show The Bill Cosby Show . He also played the keyboard for the spin-off show College Fever until the mid-1990s . During this time, he accompanied the R-'n'-B musician Freddie Jackson on his tours before he joined the band The Zen Tricksters .

In 1990 he was under discussion as the new keyboardist for Grateful Dead , replacing the late Brent Mydland . This position was first given to Bruce Hornsby and then to Vince Welnick .

Barraco stayed with The Zen Tricksters for 11 years , recorded two albums and performed up to 200 live shows per year in the US and Canada .

When A Love Surreal's second album was released in 1999 , Phil Lesh (former bassist of the Grateful Dead) became aware of Barraco. In the beginning he was only supposed to play a few gigs in San Francisco for Phil Lesh & Friends , then accompanied the band on a joint tour with Bob Dylan and became a permanent member. By 2006 he recorded three albums with Phil Lesh & Friends .

From 2002 to 2003 Barraco finally became a member of the Grateful Dead for a short time when he was on a reunion tour with the living members under the name The Other Ones (from 2003 as The Dead ) at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in Walworth County (Wisconsin). , at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California and at a New Year's Eve show in Oakland .

Also in 2002 he recorded the album New Earth Mud with Chris Robinson .

When keyboardist Scott Larnerd of the Dark Star Orchestra died in 2005 , Barraco stepped in for him and is now part of the permanent line-up.

In 2007 Barraco released his first solo album with Robert Hunter .
