Gorenje is a manufacturer of household appliances from Velenje, Slovenia . Devices are sold both under their own name and as an original equipment manufacturer under other brand names, for example for Sibir from Switzerland.
history
Along with the Končar Group, Gorenje was one of the largest manufacturers of household appliances in the former Yugoslavia . The product range extends from gas stoves and washing machines to dishwashers . The company was founded in 1950 in the Gorenje district of the municipality of Šmartno ob Paki as a manufacturer of agricultural machinery , and in 1960 the headquarters were relocated to nearby Velenje.
In 2005 the company merged its furniture manufacturing operations - Gorenje Notranja Oprema (Slovenia; kitchens, bathrooms), Gorenje Glin (Slovenia; living room and office furniture), Gorenje Kuhinje Sarajevo (Bosnia; kitchens), Gorenje Kuchyne Praga (Czech Republic; kitchens) and Gorenje Kitchens Freistadt (Austria; fitted kitchens) - together in a newly founded division . The new furniture division employed 1,100 people with an annual turnover of 75 million euros.
Gorenje had a market share of 3.2% for washing machines in Germany in 2016.
The manufacturer has been focusing on design for several years and is changing its image away from cheap products, but not always with success. In order to be able to reduce debts, Panasonic Corporation acquired a 12.7% stake in Gorenje in the first of two capital increases in 2013 .
In June 2018, 95% of the company's shares were sold to the Chinese company Hisense for 293 million euros . After the acquisition by Hisense, the number of employees was reduced from 11,000 to 9,300 , due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Slovenia , the number of jobs was reduced by another 2,000 in 2020.
The export share is 95 percent.

The company sponsors the Slovenian handball club RK Velenje , which is therefore also called RK Gorenje Velenje , as well as various winter sports enthusiasts .
