Google TV was as a software platform for set-top boxes and HDTV - televisions based on Google -Betriebssystems Android was developed. It was created as a joint development of the companies Google, Intel , Sony and Logitech (the latter announced its withdrawal in November 2011). The project was officially presented by the partners involved on May 20, 2010. On September 8, 2010, Google announced that it would launch the service worldwide in 2011. On December 20, 2010 it was announced that the introduction of Google TV would be further delayed. Possible reasons for this were poor reviews in the press, technical problems and insufficient TV content.

Hardware partner Logitech's commitment to Google TV brought a loss of $ 100 million. Since the navigation was unsuitable for a television and the range of functions hardly corresponded to the proprietary systems of the TV manufacturers, Google stopped development in 2014 and concentrated its activities on Android TV . In addition, Google introduced an alternative TV streaming model with Chromecast in July 2013.

concept

In 2010, when Google TV was developed, most Internet-connectable televisions only had specific programs for accessing some web content, such as YouTube videos or Picasa photo albums, or web content specially provided for these applications, for example Online games or news. High-performance browsers that allow access to all common contents of the World Wide Web due to their high compatibility were not widely used.

Google TV should expand the range of applications with the powerful and compatible web browser Google Chrome and Flash support. In addition, users should be able to use a search engine to search for video content that is available online, in addition to the classic search on websites, i.e. video content and current television programs. Television and the web are supposed to merge.

Google TV should analyze viewing habits and identify preferences in order to create individual program tips.

In addition, Google wanted to provide an open source platform that should allow developers to create special widgets for Google TV. This should allow users to customize their televisions to suit their individual needs. For this purpose, the Android operating system should be expanded accordingly.

Google TV was controlled with Sony's reversible remote control, which had a touchpad on the front and a full keyboard on the back.

hardware

According to Google, Google TV should not only be implemented in set-top boxes for normal televisions, but also as a module for future televisions and Blu-ray players from Sony. The smallest model of the devices presented by Sony had a screen diagonal of 24 inches. It should be available for just under $ 600.

The set-top box appeared under the name NSZ-GS7 in September 2012 for around 200 euros. The NSZ-GS9 Blu-ray player with Google TV functions should be available at the end of 2012 for around 300 euros.
