technical features

General functionality

In principle, HDMI sticks are complete computer systems that have a microprocessor, graphics unit, typically network interfaces ( WLAN ) and flash memory . Some HDMI sticks also allow the use of Sat-over-IP technology . When starting an HDMI stick, you get to a graphical user interface that is provided by an operating system installed on the HDMI stick . Image and sound are transmitted as digital signals to the television set via the HDMI interface. Windows , Linux or Android can be used as the operating system for the HDMI sticks . The user can control it using a keyboard and mouse , which are often wirelessly connected to the HDMI stick via Bluetooth or a USB cable. Control via the app on the smartphone is also increasingly possible. The connection to the Internet is via WLAN.

Use

First and foremost, HDMI sticks were developed to expand the existing playback options of the connected television with the help of the integrated computer. The sticks have a direct network connection to the Internet and thus expand the television set to become a smart TV . In this way they obtain data which they then display on the television set. For example, HDMI sticks are used as streaming media adapters to make video or audio data from the Internet playable. Local files can also be accessed via the flash memory. Some devices support the screen mirroring function, a 1: 1 screen transfer from another device (e.g. smartphone or PC ) to the television. In addition, some HDMI sticks allow the installation of apps that can expand the functions of the devices. HDMI sticks have also appeared that can perform the functions of conventional computers with full PC operating systems (e.g. Windows or Ubuntu ).
