MOM is a German Dating - reality show the streaming provider Joyn , which was first released on May 8 2020th

Due to negative reception in German society and politics regarding the subtitle Milf or Missy? it has not been used since the seventh episode. In the course of this, among other things, the advertising campaign was stopped.

procedure

In the show, the two male protagonists Marko and Felix, aged 28 and 57, dated 14 women between 24 and 46 years old. After getting to know each other for the first time (episode 1) and the first group dates in the hometown of the bachelors (episodes 2 and 3), they travel to Mexico . There the two bachelors each form a team with whom they spend the night in a hotel. At different, for example romantic or adventurous places, they get to know each other more intensively in further group and individual dates. The team constellations can be changed through nomination rounds, as Marko and Felix take turns choosing the participants.

The first round of nominations (in series jargon also: "nomination" ) took place after the first meeting. In this, the two male protagonists decided together who is allowed to go to the home dates. Since the second round of nominations, which took place before leaving for Mexico, they have been voting for themselves.

    reception

    Media reviews

The show was largely received negatively in the German media.

For Spiegel journalist Anja Rützel , the idea of making the age range more flexible than usual for a coupling broadcast is good, but the show is very clichéd. She also criticizes the names of the participants. While the younger women are referred to as Missies and the older as mothers capable of beating (Milfs), the two bachelors are subtly and connotatively referred to as Junior and Senior. Furthermore, the artificial, eponymous separation into two rival women's groups is pointless. Alisha Archie from the online magazine Noizz.de also sees an objectification and sexualization of women in the names . She also criticizes the fact that all participants are attractive, slim and white. Archie also wrote that the show's basic concept of exploring the question of whether love has no age is very promising. In summary, the show is stupidly banal and blatantly sexist and therefore the sexist dating experiment of the year.

In the online media magazines DWDL.de and Quotenmeter.de the sounding of potential concept equally praised, but mainly criticized the late and cliched implementation. Six or seven years ago the show would have attracted more attention and worked better. Today she looks like a loveless clone of the successful dating show The Bachelor .

Public criticism of the advertising campaign

The advertising campaign for the show started on April 24, 2020, and was deliberately implemented in a provocative and polarizing way by the Kolle Rebbe agency. In the social media, especially on Twitter , the posters with slogans such as “Was old? What young? Something new! ”Or“ Friday is MILF Time. ”A shit storm . In particular, sexism , objectification and degradation of women were accused.

The advertising campaign was also criticized from politics. For example, Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen - politician and Second Mayor of Munich, Katrin Habenschaden, called on Facebook on May 28, 2020 to stop the misogynist, degrading poster campaign. The CSU politician and President of the Bavarian State Parliament Ilse Aigner accused Joyn of violating human dignity with the advertising campaign. The name of the show is also a disparagement. The media group ProSiebenSat.1 Media should take on more social responsibility in its campaigns.

A total of 111 complaints were submitted to the German Advertising Council . As a result, Joyn announced on June 5, 2020 that the posters would be removed, the program would be re-set and the program's title would be changed. The term milf had not been used in online advertising since May 29th . Before that, it was repeatedly emphasized that the intention behind the format was to break down stereotypes and deal with the topic of age differences in the relationship. The topic is now a polarizing topic in society. Therefore, the decision was made specifically for controversial formulations. At the same time, the Joyn press spokeswoman expressed her understanding that the term Milf and the poster campaign for the format can be misleading without this context.
