The place has its own airport where most of the action takes place. As a backdrop of provincial airports served Kassel-Calden Airport . action

Jan Rothe is in his mid-thirties, who develops burgers from algae with his Berlin start-up. When he drives to his father Udo in the small town of Simmering, Jan realizes that he suffers from dementia . First of all, Jan would like to hand over his father to the old people's home. But when he realizes the bad conditions there, Jan decides to be there for his father and to stay in Simmering. His ex-girlfriend Sabine Grünberg gives him a job as a security employee at Simmering Airport, where he and his colleagues deal with various problems. In this way Jan can prevent the airport from being sold and achieve a wage increase for the employees. Despite moving to Simmering, Jan tries to pursue the idea of the algae burger.

background

The idea for the series about the security check at the airport came to Klaas Heufer-Umlauf when he was more thoroughly checked at the security check at an airport. Heufer-Umlauf also embodies the main character Jan in the series.

The series premiered on October 17, 2019 in the Astor Filmlounge in Berlin with the presentation of three episodes. Two episodes a week have been published on the Joyn streaming platform since October 21, 2019 . Since April 1, 2020, it has also been broadcast in double episodes on the ProSieben station.

In January 2020 it was announced that the series would be renewed for a second season, which began filming that same month. The second season with eight episodes is to be released on October 15, 2020 on Joyn's subscription video-on-demand offer Joyn Plus + .

production

The series is produced by Bird and Bird Film and Florida Entertainment for ProSieben with Lars Jessen , Sebastian Schultz and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf as producers. The directors of the first season are Lars Jessen and Ole Zapatka, the head writer is Ralf Husmann .

criticism

Anja Rützel from Spiegel Online praises the series: Ralf Husmann cuts “the sometimes rather clumsy to highly foolish charades at the security checkpoint” against “the second level of action, the increasingly confusing world of Jan's father Udo”. Strangely enough, this mood clash works surprisingly well. “As if the Check Check figures needed the nonsense level to be able to withstand the serious narrative parts better - almost like in life.” Florian Kaiser also rates the series positively on quotenmeter.de with similar words . So “[i] n especially these changes between funny and touching in connection with this bizarre and at the same time grounded troop” are the elements “that don't make this series about a tiny airport somewhere in the middle of nowhere seem irrelevant, but open up the possibility of being yourself, so to speak To be entertained in a calm and original way - and that is quite an achievement in the age of overstimulation ”. Peer Schader from dwdl.de also praises Check Check : “Thanks to its lovable characters, 'Check Check' manages to strike an unusual balance of being silly and melancholy, superficial and thoughtful at the same time. But you can turn a blind eye and ignore the weaknesses that have crept into the story. "Saskia Braun from Musikexpress.de recognizes," 'Check Check' offers the opportunity to be entertained in an unexcited and original way ". She adds that "[t] he series [...] brings humor and melancholy together in an unconventional way".

Glenn Riedmeier rated the series more critically on fernsehserien.de : “The series filmed at Kassel-Calden Airport offers nice entertainment, but nothing more. You can safely watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but it is unlikely to be the big new hit for Joyn. "

In the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Maresa Sedlmeir criticizes that the series revolves too much in circles and always follows the same pattern: "Jan Rothe is an arrogant asshole with a very soft core and all crying women [...] and all angry men Raison brings ". She also criticizes the acting performance of Heufer-Umlauf, from whom this role is not accepted. With the exception of Jan's father, who is suffering from dementia, all figures are interchangeable, according to Sedlmeir. Daniel Gerhardt is also not convinced in his review for Zeit Online . “Public television is currently filling entire focal weeks with topics such as senile dementia, the condition of local nursing homes and the moral-ecological implications of flying . […] Check Check does not, however, exhaust this potential. As the author of the series, Stromberg veteran Ralf Husmann thinks strictly from point to point. "
