History of origin
The idea for the series comes from the German screenwriter Alexander Lindh , who has already worked on the series Druck , Arman's Secret and Culpa - Nobody is guilty , among others . In an interview he announced that the idea came about during his first vacation with his child and his partner. He asked himself how his mother managed to raise him on her own, since he already felt completely overwhelmed with a partner. With the series he wants to make it clear that fathers are "no less responsible for their child."
Under the working title Mappa , the series and the production company Readymade Films received funding of 20,000 euros from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg for the development phase at the end of March 2018 . At that time it was announced that Alexander Lindh and Sabine Steyer would write the scripts for the series and that Samira Radsi would be directing the series. In September 2019 she finally received a production grant of 300,000 euros again from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg. It was also announced that the streaming platform Joyn and the state broadcaster rbb are clients of the series.
MaPa is a suitcase word consisting of the words Mama and Papa .

In addition, the executive producer Lena Wickert for Joyn and the rbb editor Kerstin Freels were involved in the production. For the casting was Nina Haun responsible.
The shooting for the six episodes took place under the direction of Jano Ben Chaabane from October to December 2019 in Berlin and Potsdam . Lindh was the head writer on the scripts, along with Ben Chaabane, Bull, Daniel Hendler , Luisa Hardenberg and Donna Sharpe . While Sophie Klebba was responsible for the costume design, Janina Kuhlmann was responsible for the makeup . Tobias Koppe acted as cameraman.
Post production

reception
criticism
The series was largely received positively in the German media. For the cultural journalist Oliver Kaever, it is an extraordinary and excellent series because it depicts real life. Every sentence and every picture of the scenes feel like realities. The Sadcom moves the audience to tears; furthermore, because grief and pain are not dramaturgized away. The BR24 culture journalist Vanessa Schneider also received that the series, like reality, is weird, profound and a bit exhausting. Alexander Lindh and the other screenwriters bring together a rare, lifelike mixture of melancholy and gallows humor that has only existed in British series so far. Therefore, the series is worth seeing. At the online media magazine DWDL.de , Kevin Hennings also wrote that the first German Sadcom was a regional pioneer that presented extraordinarily good television. It earths the viewer complaining about the state of their life due to the isolation triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic . According to Sabine Winkler, there are many sad and funny moments in the series as well as romantic comedic scenes. Social criticism is also present.
According to media critic Hans Hoff , the story of the series could be found hopelessly naive and soapy, but one could also deliver the beguiling, melancholy tone and get empathized with the main character Metin . Christian Lukas of the online media magazinequotemeter.de criticizes the series negatively. The series is a rather mixed pleasure. Those who watch the series with their hearts will be left disappointed at the end of the season.
Awards
The series was nominated for the German Television Award 2020 in the category Best Drama Series .
