German Television Award / Best Series

This article lists the nominations and the winners of the German Television Award in the categories of Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series . The categories were launched in 2018. Previously, from 1999 to 2017, the founders of the award awarded a television award in a series category ( Best Series ) without any division by genre . The winners will be determined in a secret vote by an independent jury.

History and records

The Best Series category has been awarded since 1999, with the Best Series and Best Actor Series categories merged into the Best Series / Best Actor Series category in 2001 and 2006 . Since 2018, the Best Series by Genre category has been divided into Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series .

Every year from three nominations (exception 2008: five nominations) one winner is determined. In 2018, one winner was also selected from five nominations for the category Best Drama Series .

In 2016, a German television series was nominated from pay TV for the first time . In the same year, for the first time, no series was nominated by the public television channels . Two years later, a German television series with the participation of a video-on-demand provider was nominated for the first time .

The first prize in the Best Series category was RTL's Doppelter Einsatz , which won the German Television Prize in 1999 . The last winner in the Best Series category was VOX's Club of Red Ribbons , which was honored for the second time in a row at the German Television Award 2017 .

The first winner in the Best Drama Series category was Skys and ARD's Babylon Berlin and in the Best Comedy Series category RTL's Magda does it! , which were awarded at the German Television Prize 2018 .

If you look at the TV channels commissioning the series, RTL has the most wins among the eight largest TV channels with eight awards. This is followed by Sat.1 (four awards), ARD and ZDF (three awards each) as well as VOX (two awards) and ProSieben with one award. RTL II is the only television station of the eight largest that has never received a nomination, although the station has been producing and broadcasting its own series since 2016.
