season 1

At the beginning of the first season, Leo, Emma and Hugo are in the Albertus Clinic in Cologne. When Leo gets a new bed neighbor, he wants to start a club. His hospital friend and mentor Benito told him that for a real club you need six people: a leader (Leo), a second leader who it would be if the first leader wasn't (Jonas), a handsome one (Alex), one Clever (Toni), the girl (Emma) and the good spirit (Hugo). During the first season, the friends strengthen each other and take care of Hugo, who has been in a coma for two years. Hugo is trapped in his own in-between world, he's in the swimming pool where he jumped from the 10-meter tower. All the people in the hospital who hover between life and death come to him. Toni is the only one who can "radio" with him. When Leo is diagnosed with lung cancer, his friends take turns accompanying him to chemotherapy. Emma accepts her anorexia and puts on weight, and Alex still doesn't know what's wrong with him. Once, when the whole club was sitting by Hugo's bed and singing for him, he gave a sign of improvement and sang along in the subconscious. When Alex finally learns of his diagnosis and that his chances of survival are 50:50, he decides not to tell the friends. He dies in the eighth episode of the first season. In the last episode, Hugo wakes up from his coma.

The “Club of the Red Ribbons” actors with Albert Espinosa at the preview of the 2nd season, October 2016.

History of origin

The series is based on Albert Espinosa's bestseller Secrets of Fortune from the Yellow World . The book contains Espinosa's autobiographical accounts of his time as an adolescent cancer patient: for more than ten years he has been in the hospital again and again. Just like two of the main characters from the Club of the Red Ribbons , his leg was taken off. The characters in the series are based on the friendships he made during this time.

As a scriptwriter and co-producer, Espinosa brought the story to Spanish television with the series Polseres vermelles in 2011 - with great success. The series has been adapted in over 13 countries and is broadcast in over 18 countries. Among other things, an adaptation ran in 2014 on the US television station FOX under the title Red Band Society . There, however, the series was discontinued after only 13 episodes had been ordered due to low ratings. The Italian adaptation Braccialetti Rossi , of which three seasons for RAI 1 had already been shot by December 2015, was successful with critics, juries and television viewers .

Pre-production

At the beginning of 2015, the broadcaster VOX commissioned the Cologne-based production company Bantry Bay to produce the first season. Red Ribbons Club is the station's first prime-time drama series. After Simply inseparable , Club der rote Bänder is the second in-house fictional television series produced by the station. The scripts for the first season were written by Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf .

For the series, VOX developed its own Helveticlub font from the Helvetica Light & Bold font . This font is used in the series logo, among other things.

In contrast to the first season, the scripts for the second season were not adapted, but for the first time completely redeveloped by Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf . The scripts for the third season are also written by Nolting and Scharf. Felix Binder and Marc O. Seng also worked on the scripts for the first time.

Filming

From June to October 2015, the first season of the series was filmed in the office complex at Mittelstrasse 11 to 13 in Monheim am Rhein . A complete office floor was converted into the fictitious Albertus Clinic: with an operating theater, hospital rooms, a play / classroom, hallways and corridors as well as an elevator on which only the displays work. There is also a glass-enclosed fitness room on the top floor. In addition, it was filmed in the Evangelical Hospital in Cologne-Kalk, on the beach in Cologne-Rodenkirchen and in the Müngersdorf swimming pool.

The shooting for the second season took place from May to September 2016. The film was shot again in Monheim am Rhein and in the Cologne area. The season finale was also shot on the island of Texel .

From May to September 2017, the third season was filmed again in Monheim am Rhein and for the first time in Königswinter .

While the first two seasons were filmed under the direction of Richard Huber , Felix Binder , Andreas Menck and Sabine Bernardi , the episodes for the third season were produced under the direction of Felix Binder, Sabine Bernardi and for the first time under Jan Martin Scharf .

Broadcast and episode list

On September 7, 2015 it was announced that the series could be seen in double episodes on VOX every Monday at 8:15 p.m. from November 9, 2015 . The first episode was seen by 2.36 million people. Compared to the values of the US series Chicago Fire , which ran a week earlier on Monday evening, VOX was able to gain almost a whole million viewers within a week. The first season ended on December 7, 2015 with 2.71 million viewers.

The broadcaster VOX confirmed on November 30, 2015 the order for a second season to the production company Bantry Bay . This is to be broadcast in late autumn 2016. The decision was made on the basis of the high ratings, which doubled the channel's average market shares for individual episodes.

On August 25, 2016, the broadcaster VOX announced that the first broadcast of the second season will be broadcast from November 7, 2016 on the same slot and at the same frequency as in the first season. The season opener was seen by 2.97 million people. The season finale was followed by a total of 3.23 million viewers.

reception

criticism

The reviews are mostly positive.

“German television lacks such a series. The implementation also leaves little to be desired. "

“Nothing is glossed over here, nobody is wrapped in cotton wool. The series is a prime example of how to tell heavy fabrics as light as a feather. How to entertain without delusional. How to tell of bad fates without becoming sentimental. "

- Stern .de

"Unsentimental, occasionally funny, full of gallows humor and without betraying the needs of adolescents, 'Club der rote Bänder' actually brings a completely new color to the series landscape of German television."

However, Phillip Küpperbusch writes in the online magazine Vice.com :

“VOX is really trying to get quota with fictional terminally ill children and transforms cancer, eating disorders, autism, comatose children and severe heart problems into romantic entertainment shit. [...] The everyday hospital life of seriously ill patients, the problems in everyday life, the social difficulties in the various families and with friends are at best presented on the margins realistically. "

According to Albert Espinosa , the German version or adaptation of the Catalan series Polseres vermelles is the best in the world.

Audience ratings

Vox achieved the highest ratings among the total audience (3.23 million viewers and 10.3 percent) with the broadcast of the season finale of the second season ( Die Reise ) on December 5, 2016. The lowest ratings among the total audience (2 million viewers and 6.2 Percent) was measured on December 4, 2017. It ran the seventh episode of the third season, entitled Letting Go .

When the season finale of the second season was broadcast, the target group of 14 to 49 year olds measured the highest market share with a value of 18.8 percent.

An average of 2.92 million (9.0 percent) of the total audience watched the second season of the series on VOX. In the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, an average of 1.90 million was measured and this led to a market share of 16.6 percent. In comparison with the first season it becomes clear that the audience ratings have increased in the second season. The first season was seen by an average of just 2.52 million (7.7 percent). In the measurement for the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, an average of 1.62 million or 13.9 percent was determined.

The third season was followed by an average of only 2.37 million viewers of the total audience, which corresponds to a market share of 7.4 percent. In the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, an average of only 1.51 million was measured, which led to a market share of 14.4 percent.
