Red Ribbon Club - How It All Began is a German feature film by director Felix Binder from 2019 . The film tells the prehistory of the dramedy series Club of the Red Ribbons . The film opened in German cinemas on February 14, 2019.

The teenagers Leo, Jonas, Emma, Alex, Hugo and Toni live a seemingly normal life. But Leo suddenly has to go to the hospital. There he was diagnosed with a dangerous tumor in his leg. The leg has to be amputated, with which a world collapses for the young footballer. But soon he met other young people at the Albertus Clinic in Cologne. Together they found the “Club of the Red Ribbons”.

Reviews
Elmar Krekeler, Feuilleton editor of the world , wrote in his review that the film works quite well as a “two-hour exposure”, “because a few things are cleared up that one could not or did not want to ask the series about” and highlighted Jürgen Vogel's role positive out. However, nothing else is right about the story, which is mainly due to the fact that “six previous stories want to be told here”, but the film mainly focuses on the role of Leo, which leaves “little more than hatching of the others ". In addition, “psychology is pretty simple-minded” and the film becomes hectic towards the end.
Laura Krüger drew the conclusion in the Musikexpress that the club of the red ribbons - how it all began was “touching and humorous”, an “emotional film adaptation with small weaknesses”. The film is a good addition to the series. On the other hand, she complained that of the well-known series protagonists only Leo were examined in more detail and found autism to be presented too cliché.
