The Lac de Montbel is a 5.5 square kilometer reservoir located at around 400 meters above sea level , which extends mainly in the French Ariège department . It is located on the municipal markings of Montbel and Léran . A tiny section in the extreme east belongs to the municipality of Chalabre in the Aude department . The three dams in the northwest, with which the water is dammed today, were built between 1982–85. The deepest point of the lake is around 40 meters below the water level.
