A little later, Dr. Schmidt, who turns out to be the owner of the house.

Although Nikola and Dr. Schmidt constantly arguing, there is a noticeable crackle between the two and Schmidt starts some advances. Nikola feels drawn to him, but doesn't trust him. In the last episode of the first season, Dr. Schmidt to the awkward Dr. Hauser's tips on how to end up with women, however, don't know that Hauser cares about Nikola. When Hauser succeeds and appears at a ball accompanied by Nikola, Schmidt is madly jealous. In order to break the two apart again, he incites Hauser to "go straight ahead". His clumsy approach becomes too much for Nikola and she ends the romance. Tim, who overheard the conversation between Schmidt and Hauser, tells Nikola about it. When Nikola confronts Schmidt about this, the story escalates into a heated argument that ends with the two kissing.

2nd season

The photo of Nikola and Schmidt's kiss circulates throughout the hospital and stimulates wild speculation. Tim made 200 copies. The new administrative director Wagner gets wind of it and wants to move Nikola to another station. But Schmidt can still prevent this. Because Nikolas son Peter is so bad at biology, she has to go to school for an interview and meets his biology teacher Thomas Tewis. The two get closer, which Schmidt doesn't like at all.

In the last episode of the season, the elevator in Schmidt's house with Nikola, Schmidt, his companion and Tewis gets stuck. Tewis climbs through the skylight and is the first to get Schmidt's companion onto the elevator roof. Then the elevator continues to sag and Nikola and Schmidt can no longer be freed through the hatch. When the elevator ropes threaten to break, Schmidt is about to make a declaration of love to Nikola. At that moment, the elevator falls down. Fortunately, the two are unscathed. It is with obvious regret that Schmidt and Nikola break up in the company of their appointments.

3rd season

Nikola is with Tewis, in love and happy. However, Tewis constantly argues with Schmidt and tells Nikola to stay out of what makes her angry. When Schmidt and Tewis fight in their apartment, she separates from Tewis.

A few episodes later, in the hospital, Nikola met Hannes Bischof. She takes the initiative and asks him if he would like to go out to eat with her. After a nice evening, Nikola invites Hannes to her apartment for a drink. Hannes comes along for a coffee - which, according to Tim, is the secret code for "I want sex". When Nikola tries to kiss him, Hannes resists vehemently and finally escapes. The next day he wants to apologize to her, but ends up with Tim in an empty hospital room. When Nikola walks in, the two are hugging. Tim explains to her that Hannes is gay. Nikola is pissed off. Schmidt, who overheard the conversation between the two, later tells Nikola that Hannes has always been gay, but too cowardly to stand by it. Nikola forgives them both. Tim and Hannes become a couple and a few episodes later Hannes moves into Tim's apartment.

After Tim is freshly in love, he also thinks Nikola urgently needs a man, so he places a personal ad in the newspaper on her behalf. Nikola is angry and wants to throw away all the letters. But then she reads it and discovers a letter that she likes. When Schmidt appears in the restaurant at the agreed time, they initially believe that they have answered each other, which turns out to be wrong.

At the end of the season, Schmidt fell out with the head of administration Wagner. When he wants to apologize, Schmidt insults him and then quits. At first both Wagner and Nikola are happy with it, but only a little later Wagner asks Nikola to talk to Schmidt again. After Nikola and Schmidt had another violent argument in the storage room, Dr. Schmidt suddenly announced his intention to leave the hospital.

4th season

The new head of administration is expected at the hospital. Tim and Nikola are already in a bad mood when they learn that the new one is an old friend of Dr. Schmidt is. Schmidt does everything to ingratiate himself with Erik Berg. At Erik's first party, Schmidt catches him and Nikola making out in the nurses' room. Tim is outraged by what happened to Nikola. However, the whole thing develops into a serious relationship. At first, Nikola Erik tries to hide the fact that Schmidt is driving her crazy, since he is Erik's best friend. That only works for a short time, but Erik understands. However, their happiness is disturbed when Nikola finds out that Erik is still married because of tax benefits. Erik can straighten this out again. He promises to finally get a divorce and the two make up.

In the meantime, Nikola has problems with her son Peter, who has turned 18 and moves into the empty apartment on Schmidt's floor after an argument. When Schmidt believes that Erik would propose to Nikola, he orders his assistant doctor Charlotte Borstel to marry him. She is blown away because she has been in love with Schmidt for a long time. Shortly afterwards she stands in front of the door with a suitcase and wants to move in with him for a few days so that they can get to know each other better before the wedding. Schmidt realizes what crap he has done and brings Nikola and Erik into his apartment so that they don't have to be alone with Charlotte. When he has a panic attack and hyperventilates, Nikola persuades him that he has to tell Borstel that he does not want to marry her. After Erik and Nikola have said goodbye, Erik Nikola proposes in front of Schmidt's door. Schmidt is visibly horrified when, after a moment's hesitation, she agrees.

5th season

Nikola and Erik are planning their wedding. When Erik makes Schmidt his best man, Nikola is not very enthusiastic and fears a disaster. That’s what happens. At the registry office, Schmidt tries one last time to convince Erik not to marry and smokes a cigar with him. Erik cannot take this and passes out. Suddenly the rubbish bin starts to burn, and when Tim tries to put out the fire with the water from a vase, he pours it over Nikola. The groom vomits, the bride is soaking wet, the wedding is called off. Thanks to his good relationships, Tim can make a new appointment the next day.

In the evening Schmidt comes to Nikola and drinks a glass of wine with her. Nikola says that she will move to Munich with Erik because Erik wants to start a new job there. When Schmidt tells her she would make a mistake, she throws him out. The next day they are back at the registry office. At the wedding, Nikola suddenly realizes that she cannot marry Erik and leaves him. Erik goes to Munich. Nikola is later suspected of being pregnant. A test confirms this. After Schmidt chattered on the phone, Erik comes back from Munich. However, Nikola confused her pregnancy test with that of sister Kati, which means that she is not pregnant after all.

The new administrative director arrives at the hospital who, as Schmidt believes, wants to reduce his beds. He then wrote an angry letter of complaint and cited Nikola as a supporter of his complaint. However, it turns out that Ms. Springer wants to increase the number of beds. Nikola and Schmidt go on the hunt for the letter. At the end of the story, Ms. Springer thinks Schmidt is gay.

Because Nikola does so many additional tasks, she can take part in advanced medical training. At first she understands next to nothing, but with the help of Dr. Schmidt, passed the exam with flying colors. She is offered the position of the nursing manager, which she wants to decline at first. When Nikola fell out with Schmidt about it, she accepted out of sheer frustration. However, Nikola soon realizes that she prefers to work in the ward rather than in administration and, to Schmidt's relief, returns to orthopedics. The season ends with Nikola and Schmidt accidentally eating von Peters hash cookies and admitting their love to each other, totally stoned.

6th season

After Nikola and Dr. Schmidt confessed their love while stoned, they now don't know how to deal with it. To find out if it's serious, they arrange to have dinner. The two end up in a diner and surprisingly have a nice evening. They decide to meet again, this time in a real restaurant. In conversation with Tim, however, Nikola realizes that there are complications when work and love mix. That's why she doesn't go to the date. Schmidt, who is waiting for her in the restaurant, is told by the waiter that he has already been inflamed in the same way for countless women. So Schmidt pinches and runs away before Nikola (does not) appear.

The next day they want to apologize to the other and discover that they have both been transferred. Then they argue who moved whom and agree that nothing would have happened to them. The arguments with Schmidt go on and Nikola can't stand to have him around all day. In order to create a spatial distance, she wants to move out. She has also found a great new apartment and asks Schmidt to release her from the lease. He agrees, but assigns a colleague to the apartment, who keeps driving the rent up until Nikola gives up and stays.

In the hospital, the new anesthetist makes life difficult for the nurses and doctors. Nikola and Schmidt both can't stand Olivia Steiner and initially join forces against her. But then Olivia wraps Schmidt around her fingers, the two start a relationship and Olivia moves in with Schmidt.

Nikola also has a new relationship with Dr. Steiner's brother Martin. In the last episode of the season, Martin invites Nikola to dinner with his parents. The meal takes place in Schmidt's apartment. Olivia and Schmidt find Nikola's presence highly inappropriate, especially since Schmidt wants to propose to Olivia. He had the engagement ring baked in a petit four, which unfortunately is eaten by Nikolas dog Oskar. When they finally have the ring back and wishes Nikola Schmidt all the best in front of his door, she hugs him, which ends in a deep kiss. The door opens and Olivia, Martin and the parents see them kiss. The engagement is off.

7th season

Schmidt's engagement to Dr. Steiner has burst and Nikola has also ended her relationship with Martin. Due to her continuing professional discrepancies, Nikola quit the Rheintalklinik and started a job at the university clinic. Schmidt is angry and wants Nikola back as a nurse. He allies himself with Tim, who also desperately wants Nikola back. Every new ward nurse is pissed off by Schmidt within a very short time.

In private life between Nikola and Schmidt is going so well that they spend their first night together. Tim, who rings Schmidt's doorbell the next morning and finds out what has happened, is horrified that Schmidt is going so far and sleeping with Nikola to bring her back to his ward. Schmidt had never had that thought, but when he returns to Nikola’s bed he makes the mistake and asks if she cannot come back when everything is clear between them now. That ends in an argument, and Nikola declares their night together a big mistake.

In the next episode, Schmidt visits Nikola in the university clinic to understand why she likes it there and doesn't want to go back. He even has his stomach mirrored because he doesn't want to go. Half anesthetized, he mumbles: "Nikola, why do you keep pushing me back?" She later explains to him that whenever they get a step closer, he tears the bridges off again. Unfortunately, Nikola’s professional happiness is short-lived. Due to staff cuts, she was fired after four weeks and had to look for a new job.

At the employment office, she receives a proposal for her old job, which she rejects. Later the position of the ward nurse becomes vacant in the gynecology department. What Tim is not entirely innocent of, he irritated his former sister until she hit him a violet and was dismissed without notice. Nikola returns to the Rheintalklinik. When Nikola breaks her hand in a fall and mumbles Robert several times in the hospital, she is afraid that this could repeat itself under anesthesia and wants to be operated not by Schmidt, but by a colleague. Schmidt is deeply offended that she refuses his help.

In the last episode of the season, Schmidt comes back from Boston with a new job offer. He doesn't actually want to leave, but when Nikola provokes him that he won't go anyway, he packs his things. At the farewell party, Nikola realized that he was really leaving and couldn't bear to talk to Schmidt. So she goes again. Schmidt, who had been looking for her very disappointed, drives to the airport without saying goodbye to her. When Nikola finds out that he's gone, she rushes to the airport in a taxi and actually makes it through the security check to the gate. Shortly before reaching the goal, she falls over a bag and lands unhappy on the floor. Schmidt, who was almost on the plane, takes care of them. When the stewardess urges him to get on, he insists on his Hippocratic oath and his duty to look after Nikola. When the stewardess pressed on, he canceled his flight and stayed. He picks up Nikola and carries her away in his arms. Then you see Nikola rolling through the hall in an airport wheelchair on Schmidt's lap and arguing with him about which direction to go.

8th season

Schmidt quit his new job in Boston because of Nikola. Now the two do not know how they relate to each other. Since they cannot find a clear answer to this, they want to try it as friends first. Which works more or less well. In the episode The Last Tango , the two discover their common passion for dancing and train with great pleasure for a dance event.

The season ends with Nikola and Schmidt waking up together in Schmidt's bed after a night of drinking and not being able to remember what happened. At first they try to convince themselves that nothing has happened, but the night was momentous: Nikola is pregnant and will be mother again at the age of 42. She is torn and does not want to tell Schmidt at first. But the hormones go crazy. When they are arguing again in the closet, to Schmidt's astonishment she bursts into tears and tells him.

9th season

Schmidt also shows up on Nikolas first visit to the gynecologist. The two quarrel during the exam and conclude that there is nothing to bind them together until they hear their baby's heartbeat.

In the hospital meanwhile, everyone is speculating about who the father of Nikolas baby is. Schmidt and Nikola want to keep it a secret. When Schmidt realizes that her secret is about to be revealed, he tells Mrs. Springer in a fictitious conversation that the cleaning man Salvatore is the father. Everyone is amazed; when Nikola finally hears it, she is pissed off. A lip-reading patient who watches the argument between Nikola and Schmidt reveals the secret.

Tim proposes marriage to Nikola and wants to be a father to the child. Salvatore had also announced this intention. Nikola laughs at Tim's request and refuses. Schmidt, however, realizes that his behavior is frowned upon by his colleagues and fears losing his good reputation. So he also proposes to Nikola, but only because he is assuming her refusal anyway. He stages it in such a way that the patient watches them again, so that he can tell around that Nikola has refused.

However, he suddenly realizes that he is serious about the application. But Nikola refuses, even if she knows that he will not repeat the request. She later expresses doubts to Tim whether her decision was the right one and admits that she has probably always loved Schmidt. When she fell weak two weeks before the due date, Schmidt prays for her in the hospital chapel. Tim, who wants to light a candle for Nikola, hears Schmidt say that he cannot live without Nikola.

In order to finally bring the two together, Tim pays a gypsy who announces a misfortune at the birth if the two are not married by then. Schmidt and Nikola first doubt the prophecy, but then decide to get married. When labor started before the wedding date, Nikola tries to postpone the birth until Schmidt is there with the hospital priest. Tim admits that he paid the gypsy. When Nikola throws him out of the delivery room, he makes it clear to Schmidt and Nikola that they should love each other and finally put an end to the nonsense.

While Nikola and Schmidt look at their healthy son happily, they consider that they don't have to get married now. The season ends in the church, where the wedding of Nikola and Dr. Schmidt and the baptism of their son is celebrated. In the final scene you can see a birth announcement of Robert Nikolas Schmidt. Nikolas hand crosses out the name and writes Nikolas Robert Schmidt under it by hand.
