American Linen Supply Company ( ALSCO ) is a traditional service company that began with a towel service and soon gained international importance with the distribution and care of work clothing, hotel and catering textiles and dust control mats .

history

George A. Steiner was fourteen years old in Lincoln, Nebraska, when he used his cart to bring towels to the laundry in front of the school and to pick them up after school. He made three dollars a week with this textile service. A year later, in August 1889, Steiner bought his business from George Johnson, the man he worked for, for $ 50 and 80 cents. George and his brother Frank, who was his partner until his death in 1939, got the business up and running quickly. The cart became a bicycle, the bicycle a horse and cart. In addition to towels, aprons, sheets, tablecloths and other textiles have now also been included in the program. In the meantime George was studying, and after his university days he moved to Salt Lake City in 1895 , where he finally founded the American Linen Supply Company, or ALSCO for short. The company grew steadily. At the beginning of the last century the first in-house laundries were established and green and white branches soon sprang up across the United States. Within a few years, a completely new industry had developed from an idea of pocket money.

In 1951, the Steiner family founded the first subsidiary in Germany and opened a paper shop in Frankfurt am Main. In February 1956, Frank G. Steiner, the son of the company founder, decided to open the second independent laundry branch outside of the North American continent after Brazil in Germany. His choice fell on Cologne , where ALSCO Berufskleidungs-Service GmbH was founded.

The company currently employs more than 17,000 people worldwide, around 1,700 of them in Germany. It is still run by the family that owns it, the Steiners. The German headquarters are in Cologne. Rene Schneider and Robert C. Steiner are the managing directors of ALSCO Berufskleidungs-Service GmbH.
