action

Lasko (Mathis Landwehr) with ring bearer in the monastery church (school gate)

The history of the character Lasko is told in the television film Lasko - On behalf of the Vatican . Lasko was originally a soldier of the KFOR peacekeeping force who quit his service in Kosovo after a traumatic experience and retired as a monk to a monastery .

In the walls of the monastery Lasko is trained by Brother Magnus to be a ring bearer of the order “Pugnus Dei” (“The Fist of God”). Within the order, the so-called ring bearers (agents) receive training in martial arts of Asian character, whereby the style can be different from sequence to sequence (e.g. Kung-Fu , Muay Thai or Jiu Jitsu ), and sometimes different elements in one Fight scene can be found. He uses his skills to fight villains of all kinds, for example the "secret box" Ares, which seeks to strengthen the Vatican in Western societies through methods such as torture, murder or terrorism .

While Lasko embodies the disciplined, strong and humble hero as the main character of the series, his "assistant" and closest friend Gladius stands for the easily seduced sinner who often raves about pretty women or likes to drink a glass too much.

In addition to the monks of the order, the BKA investigator Sophia von Erlen Lasko regularly helps with his assignments. In the first episode, she appears as an investigator who wants to put an international arms dealer down. However, she is captured by the Ares Lodge and is freed by Lasko. She has a special interest in the order because her missing father was also a ring bearer and she wants to look for and find him.

Characters

main characters

Brother Lasko

In the movie, Lasko is a former Bundeswehr soldier who quit duty and went to the monastery to find his inner peace. In the series (season 1), however, he came to the monastery as a child and was raised there. Lasko is the epitome of a calm and exemplary monk, but also a disciplined and honorable warrior. He has high principles, is very trusting and loyal. As an elite fighter, he has mastered various unarmed martial arts, which he trains regularly (in season 1). After the death of his mentor, he takes over his place as “ring bearer” and partner of his friend Gladius.

Brother gladius

Gladius is Lasko's best friend and brother in the monastery. He is also an active Pugnus Dei monk, but not a ring bearer, but an "Adlatus". As such, he is responsible for supporting his partner, taking on logistical help, researching or giving backing. He already held this role under Lasko's predecessor Matthias. In the pilot film and in the second season he seems cozy and hedonistic, but is also energetic and has a clear, rational view. In the first season, however, he is portrayed as notoriously drunk and unreliable - and thus as a blatant counterpart to Lasko.

Supporting characters season 1

Sophia von Erlen

Sophia is a BKA officer whose paths happen to cross with those of Pugnus Dei. Her father was a ring bearer, but was expelled from the order at the time and started a family. One day he disappeared without a trace, but left his medal ring to Sophia, who has never given up looking for him. She hopes for answers from Lasko and his fellow brothers. After it became clear that they too did not know anything about Richard von Erlen's whereabouts, Sophia occasionally supports the monks - to the chagrin of her superior. In the second season she no longer appears.

Brother magnus

Magnus takes on the role of Lasko's trainer, fatherly friend and wise old man in season 1. He usually seems to know more than he says and always means well to others. He does not appear in the pilot film or in the second season.

Brother quintus

Quintus is a monk with Pugnus Dei and a ring bearer. Although he is an excellent fighter, the younger Lasko is often preferred to him. Out of envy, he becomes an informer for the Ares Lodge, and even tries - in order to be officially admitted to Ares - to kill Lasko, which he cannot bring himself to do. At last he sacrifices his life to protect Lasko and his order.

Supporting characters season 2

Abbot Georg

Georg comes to the monastery as the new abbot at the beginning of the second season. He is a ring bearer and honorable fighter, but also a background organizer. Mostly the big picture, he doesn't think much of Laskos and Gladius' going it alone, but otherwise appreciates both of them very much. He has a younger brother named Sebastian. He always lived on the brink of crime, sat in jail, and eventually joined Ares to destroy his brother.

Novice Michael

Michael, about 20 years old, lives in the second season as a novice in the monastery. Michael is very adventurous and cannot stand it that his confreres carry out exciting missions while he is always supposed to stay in the monastery.

Clarissa de Angelo

The Vatican policewoman meets Lasko and Gladius for the first time during a research that leads them to Germany. She is quick with the firearm and even quicker with her convertible. After Lasko saves her life, the two become good friends. At first it seems that they have romantic feelings for one another, but Lasko makes it clear that his calling comes first. Finally, Clarissa gets engaged to an Interpol agent and asks Lasko to be her best man.

production

The first season of Lasko - Die Faust Gottes was produced by Hermann Joha , Rolant Hergert and Stefan Weidenbacher from May to December 2008, directed and camera by Axel Sand . The costume design for the series was created by Till Fuhrmann . For Lasko's fighting style, choreographer Ramazan Bulut oriented himself towards Far Eastern martial arts and techniques from German boxing and wrestling.

Charisma

season 1

The first season was broadcast on ORF 1 from June 18 to July 29, 2009. The first season ran on RTL from June 18 to July 30, 2009 on Thursdays at 8:15 p.m.

In Italy , Rai 2 aired the first season from July 13, 2010 on Tuesdays at 9:50 pm.

season 2

The broadcast of the eight new episodes began on October 21, 2010 and ended on RTL on December 16, 2010. Since RTL did not find the ratings consistently satisfactory, the production of further sequels was waived. In retrospect, producer Hermann Joha himself later pointed out some circumstances and decisions that had made it difficult to retain a broad audience in the long term with this format.

Episode list

criticism

Lasko - The Fist of God received mostly bad reviews. This is how Heike Barnitzke from TV Spielfilm wrote :

“The good news for RTL first: The fans of 'Cobra 11' will probably like this martial arts nonsense too. Because apart from uptight male friendship and other rebelliousness, the new work of stunt forge Action Concept also includes oath esotericism, a secret order with the stupid name Pugnus Dei, Gothic vaults and an official conspiracy, of course in the Vatican. Sounds like a ratings hit. "

- Heike Barnitzke : TV feature film

In contrast, it was nominated in 2009 for the German Television Award in the “Best Series” category.

DVD publications

The complete first season of the series was published on August 28, 2009 and, in addition to the 7 episodes, also contains the pilot film Lasko - On behalf of the Vatican as well as the making of the feature film and an interview with Mathis Landwehr . The second came out on December 17, 2010 and contains all 8 episodes of the season.
