Eureka TV was the name of a German private television station that was on the air from May 1, 1987 to December 31, 1988. It is the forerunner of ProSieben .

history

In 1986 the Eureka Television GmbH was founded. An experimental program was started on November 15, 1986. On May 1, 1987, the regular Eureka TV program went on air with a mixture of information programs and teleshopping . The station's profile was very reminiscent of a news station, similar to the later n-tv . In the initial phase, some English programs were shown by the American information channel Worldnet ; From May 1987, a special- interest program with a focus on information and teleshopping, including breakfast television, was broadcast. Eureka under the editor-in-chief Hermanni (from August 1987) developed a new program structure and, with 30 teams of correspondents in Germany and program suppliers such as ABC, CBS, CNN, ESPN and NOWOSTI, delivered an information and news program that was unique for German conditions at the time.

The station became known to some of its viewers u. a. through various Christian broadcasts several times a week by Media Vision , a Christian association that held 25 percent of the votes in the station at the time. This form of paid program takeover was new in Germany and only known from programs from abroad such as Super Channel (later NBC Europe ). Due to a lack of spectators and scarce advertising income, the managing director Heiner Wehking was dismissed in July 1988 and the editor-in-chief Hermanni was appointed managing director at the same time. Hermanni received the order from the sole shareholder Medimedia Programm GmbH Gerhard Ackermans to renovate Eureka and to look for further co-shareholders. He found one in Thomas Kirch , the son of Leo Kirch . Kirch acquired 49 percent of the station Eureka TV. The later managing director of the pay-TV provider Premiere , Georg Kofler , became the managing director .

In November 1988, Eureka Television GmbH became ProSieben Television GmbH , which first went on air on January 1, 1989 under the name Pro 7 with nine hours of programming. From Eureka u. a. the editor-in-chief Hermanni and the news anchor Norbert Anwander took over. The latter continued to present the news, although it was no longer broadcast as often as on Eureka TV. With the changed shareholder structure, Pro 7 was expanded into a full program with a strong feature film component.
