Thomas Kirch (born February 13, 1957 ) is a German media entrepreneur .

Life

The son of the film rights dealer Leo Kirch and Ruth Weigand studied computer science and economics in Boston .

In 1988 he took a 49% stake in the private television provider Eureka TV , which went on air as a full program in 1989 under the new name Pro 7 .

In 1997 Thomas Kirch became the majority shareholder of ProSieben Media AG with a stake of 58.4%, to which the television programs Pro 7 and Kabel 1 belonged. He was also involved in the metropolitan area channels TV Munich and TV Berlin , the shopping channel HOT and the Berlin radio station Hundert, 6 .

At the end of 1999, Thomas Kirch brought his shares in ProSieben Media AG into his father's KirchMedia GmbH & Co. KGaA , which became the majority shareholder in both Sat.1 and the ProSieben Group. Thomas Kirch himself had a 6.54 percent stake in KirchMedia, which filed for bankruptcy in April 2002 and was finally broken up.
