Günter Schmidt (journalist)

Günter Schmidt (born November 24, 1941 in Vienna ; † August 21, 2010 ibid) was an Austrian journalist , long-time television presenter and correspondent .

Life

Günter Schmidt completed his studies at the University of World Trade in 1967 with a degree in business administration . During his studies he worked as assistant to the chief correspondent in the Vienna office of the Reuters news agency . In 1968 he moved and worked for the German language service of the BBC London . After finishing his work at the BBC, he took over the editorial management of the German-language service of the Los Angeles Times / Washington Post News Service in London .

In 1972 he switched to the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). From January 1975 he worked there as a senior editor / reporter for foreign countries and business. In addition, he was a long-time presenter of the news program Zeit im Bild and the business magazine Schilling (now € co ). From 1992 until his replacement by Roland Adrowitzer on August 31, 2002, he headed the ORF correspondent's office in Brussels . Austria's accession to the European Union and the preceding negotiations also took place at this time. He passed on his experiences in Brussels in various lectures and articles.

Schmidt retired at the end of 2003.

He died unexpectedly of complications from pneumonia, leaving behind a wife, three children and a grandchild. He was buried at the Kalksburger Friedhof (2-16) in Vienna.

In an obituary, a colleague characterized him as follows: "I have never seen a person who thinks so quickly and moves so slowly." He thought very quickly, but acted deliberately. One of his favorite sentences was: "You have to look very carefully."
