Magazin 1 is an early evening information magazine from ORF that has been broadcast on ORF 1 from Monday to Friday at 6:10 p.m. since April 8, 2019 .

Thematically, the magazine ranges from the latest news and background information on current topics from politics , the chronicle, economy , society and sport to entertainment and culture . On December 2, 2019, the airtime was shortened from around 25 to ten minutes and the focus was more on entertainment.

Moderation and content

Magazine 1 is moderated alternately by Lillian Moschen and Mariella Gittler . On April 7, 2020, Moschen took over the moderation of Stefan Lenglinger , who has usually alternated weekly through the program, initially with Lisa Gadenstätter and then with Gittler, and switched to the ZIB editions on ORF 1 in 2020 . Gittler took over the moderation of Gadenstätter on October 9, 2019.

Until November 29, 2019 there was a framework for the broadcasting process. First a current topic was reported, then current social issues. At the end of the program, entertainment and culture, for example music, were the focus. Guests, such as experts, were often invited or connected to current as well as cultural topics. In the beginning there was the weekly (mostly Mondays or Tuesdays) broadcast column "Wälters Welten", in which the native of Germany ORF reporter Peter Wälters looked humorously at peculiarities of the Austrians.

With the introduction of the new quiz program Q1 - A hint is wrong after Magazine 1, the program was shortened from 23 to 28 minutes to ten minutes from December 2, 2019. Since then there has been no clear structure. Several shorter contributions on various current topics are broadcast per program, whereby the entertainment character of the contributions has increased.

Concept and optics

The program is part of a concept started in 2019 that provides for greater independence for the ORF 1 and ORF 2 channels within ORF. Like the broadcaster ORF 1, the magazine is intended to appeal to particularly younger viewers between the ages of 12 and 49. In addition, one wants to increase the information and Austria-related part of the program on ORF 1. The number 1 in the name of the program indicates the station. The early evening magazine Studio 2 , which has been running on ORF 2 since the beginning of 2019, represents a counterpart that is more geared towards an older target group.

The shortening of the broadcast in December 2019 met with criticism from information editors of ORF 1 regarding the reduction in news. They fear a complete conversion to an entertainment magazine.

The program is broadcast from its own studio, which was also put into operation on April 8, 2019, the day of the first issue, for the issues of Zeit im Bild broadcast on ORF 1 . All elements of the studio (video walls, furniture ) are rectangular. This is intended to express the motto “ORF 1 has corners and edges”. The logo of the program is the block letter M with a double drawn transparent-white frame line, which is interrupted in two places at the top right. The small piece of the frame between the gaps is completely white and at the same time represents a rectangular number 1. Since April 26, 2019, this rectangular one has been part of the new ORF 1 station logo, which means that the station name "ORF eins", which has been used since 2011, is closed again "ORF 1" was. The classic broadcast background has a color gradient from top to bottom from light to darker turquoise to purple, which is dark red at the very bottom. For information on further contributions during the broadcast, a briefly shown with a reversed background is shown. In order to distinguish the topics from one another, the background color is changed several times between red, turquoise and purple during the course of the program.

Audience ratings

The first edition on April 8, 2019 achieved the highest audience rating to date with 93,000 viewers and a market share of six percent (13% among 12-49 year olds). The number of viewers has since declined to 40,000 to 50,000 with a market share of three to four percent (6–7% for 12–49 year olds) in the second week of broadcast. The US series The Simpsons , which was previously broadcast on this slot, achieved similar ratings among the total audience, but slightly higher among the younger core target group. On the part of the ORF one speaks of a longer establishment process.
