Django - The gravedigger are already waiting is an Italo-Western filmed by Enzo G. Castellari in 1967 . The story largely follows the Hamlet material ; the international title is also Johnny Hamlet . The German-language premiere took place on November 26, 1968.
action
Django (originally: Johnny Hamlet) comes home after 2 years of service in the Southern Army and finds his father dead. His mother is married to his uncle, Claudio Hamilton, who now owns the ranch and the family's gold treasure. In addition, Django's former bride was forcibly married to one of his favorites. Allegedly Django's father was killed by the bandit Santana, which he had to pay with his life. However, there are increasing indications that Santana is alive and that Django's father was murdered by his own brother.
Django bitterly seeks revenge. A silver ear jewelry from the showwoman Eugenia, with whom he enters into a relationship, leads him on the trail of the allegedly dead bandit. He discovered the complicity between Santana and Claudio Hamilton. He sows discord between the two by telling Santana about the family gold, what his uncle has kept from him. Eugenia and Django's mother are murdered as accomplices. In the dramatic final battle, Django kills his uncle when he tries to flee with the gold. In one of the final scenes, Django crushes the sacks of gold dust, which is then blown away by the wind.
Reviews
As usual from director Enzo G. Castellari , the action-oriented film provoked opposing judgments. Karl A. Stanke wrote in the magazine Filmecho / Filmwoche : “Speed, dry slogans and dazzling color photography mean that there is no boredom. A shot of self-irony and the over-the-top choreography of the beatings move possible brutalities into the realm of fable ”. The magazine Filmdienst , however, judged: “(...) the staff is interchangeable. This western is far from an original achievement. ” Finally, Joe Hembus noted in the standard reference work Western Lexicon that the film had nothing to do with the Django series; the label was only stuck on him in the Federal Republic for commercial reasons. Even the Protestant film observer did not come to a better judgment: “A Western [...] that, despite borrowing from the Hamlet material, hardly gets beyond fights and carnage among extras and leading actors. Superfluous."
