Peter Filzmaier (born September 5, 1967 in Vienna ) is an Austrian political scientist . He is professor for democracy studies and political research at Danube University Krems and for political communication at Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz .

Life

Peter Filzmaier was born in Vienna in 1967. After graduating from the Bundesrealgymnasium Vienna IX, studying political science, journalism and law and obtaining his doctorate (political science) at the University of Vienna in 1993, he worked as a lecturer at the universities of Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck. In 1998 he took over the political education department at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Further Education at the Universities of Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Vienna and Graz, and in parallel with his habilitation in 2001, he was also head of the political education department. Filzmaier has headed the Department for Political Communication at Danube University Krems since 2005 and has held the Chair for Democracy Studies and Political Research since 2006. Since 2010 he has also been Professor of Political Communication at the Karl Franzens University in Graz . Filzmaier is the managing partner of the Institute for Strategy Analysis (ISA) in Vienna.

Filzmaier's work and research focuses on election research , political communication , political education , the Internet and democracy as well as international politics with a focus on the USA . He is the scientific director of the university courses for political education and political communication at Danube University Krems . Filzmaier was and is also a columnist and guest commentator in newspapers - u. a. in Der Standard (2005 to 2007), in Austrian federal state newspapers ("Filzmaier am Montag", 2007 to 2015) and in the Kronen Zeitung ("Filzmaier analyzes", since 2015) - as well as a regular political analyst for Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) active.

His family name was the inspiration for the verb Filzmaiern for Analyze Politics, which made it to third place in Word of the Year in Austria in 2015 .
