Nannen price

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nannen Prize (formerly the Henri Nannen Prize ) is a competition award that honors the best journalistic work in print and online of the previous year. The publishing house Gruner + Jahr and the magazine stern that appears in it want to “promote and maintain quality journalism in German-speaking countries” (according to their self-portrayal). The media prize is awarded in six categories. The best reportage is awarded the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize, awarded in 1977 by Stern founder Henri Nannenwas launched. The Nannen Prize continues the tradition of the renowned Henri Nannen Prize. The award ceremony will take place in Hamburg  - the company location of Gruner + Jahr. It is considered the "most coveted German journalist award". The award has not been endowed since 2016.

In 2015 the prize, which has been awarded since 2005, was not awarded Due to cost-cutting measures and job cuts, the festive framework for the award ceremony is not guaranteed, according to the publisher's justification. In 2016 the competition was held again after the content had been revised and the award event took place in Hamburg in April. Due to the dangers posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 award ceremony did not take place as a gala and without the winners being present; it was shown as an online event on the Internet.

Categories

The award is given in six categories. Since 2016 these have been these categories:

Additionally awarded

In 2007, first place in the “Reportage” category was awarded twice. In the years 2005 and 2007–2009 no special award was given.

In 2017, a “Honorable Mention” was given in the photo reportage category for the first time.

Regulations

The prize is awarded annually. The first place in each category is awarded. The journalistic work must have been published in the previous year. As of 2009, online publications were also admitted to the competition in addition to print articles.

Criticism and controversy

In 2011, Spiegel editor René Pfister had to return his award a few days after the award ceremony, after the jury subsequently came to the conclusion that he had done improper research for his report on Horst Seehofer . The withdrawal met with some criticism and incomprehension in the industry. In 2012 there was a scandal when the jury awarded a contribution by Bild about the then Federal President Christian Wulff in the category “Best Investigative Achievement” . Editors of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , who were also to be honored, then did not accept their award. The award of the Bild editors was controversial in the jury itself . The Otto Brenner Foundation had previously criticized this nomination as not worthy of the award in a study, as Bild and Wulff had had a business relationship for years.

In 2014, award winner Jacob Appelbaum was critical of the name giver of the award. He decided to melt down his price and donate the proceeds to two associations in the field of anti-fascism . A few days later , after a conversation with Appelbaum, another award winner, Laura Poitras , also spoke of possibly lowering her price.
