In the video, the author Sophie Passmann leads through various cellar rooms in which the exhibition Men's Worlds can be seen. Prominent and non-prominent women were involved in the individual stages of the exhibition. The presenter Palina Rojinski presents a gallery of penis photos that were sent to her and her friends on the Internet. The TV presenters Katrin Bauerfeind and Jeannine Michaelsen , the rapper Visa Vie and the model Stefanie Giesinger read out Internet postings about themselves in which they are threatened and insulted with sexual violence. Collien Ulmen-Fernandes and Katrin Bauerfeind also present excerpts from chats in which men write how they want to “fuck” women and refer to them as “whores”. From the off, women report physical sexualized attacks, for example in a taxi or in an elevator. In one room, items of clothing are shown that the victims wore when they were raped, and passages of text are read out in which they describe what happened to them.
reception
The video received a lot of political and media attention. Federal Minister for Women Franziska Giffey announced that her ministry welcomed any commitment “that supports our efforts to raise public awareness of this issue”. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas thanked all women who “reported on their cruel experiences”. The SPD MEP Tiemo Wölken called the video "probably the most important 15 minutes of television of the year". The women involved had "held up to us men the horrible #Men's world mirror".
Julia Kepenek vom Stern wrote: “This prime time post is important, harrowing and long overdue. Joko and Klaas have shown once again that they can use their airtime not only for silly gossip, but also for serious issues. If you missed this quarter of an hour, you should see it as soon as possible. "
In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Elena Witzeck stated that the video made one very thoughtful: “How can it be that half of the women, a quarter of the population, have to grapple with this problem - and still nothing happens? Why can the big platforms no longer be held responsible for protecting women? And why the hell are there still so many bureaucratic, social, psychological hurdles that only a tenth of all women dare to ask for their rapist to be convicted? Some of the contribution should not only have stunned, but simply made angry. One can assume that that was his goal. And that the protest will not be quieter - as uncomfortable and demanding as it may seem to some. "
On Twitter, the hashtag # Männerwelten was trending on the day it was broadcast in Germany. Many users praised the video and reported their own experiences. However, it was criticized that only certain types of women were presented in the video, while the violent acts described could happen to everyone. Also, Carolina Black complained in her review in taz , it had remained unmentioned women. “But the lack of perspective for LGBT IQ people, women of color or women with disabilities is no small matter. Women with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be affected by sexual violence than others. Women of Color are significantly more likely to be victims of digital violence than white women. These women should have had their say in the video. "
The journalist Sonja Eismann from Missy Magazine criticized the fact that sexualized assaults were presented in the exhibition as something “blatant” and “scary”, while being part of everyday life. With her “horror factor” in the dark cellar, the exhibition reminds her of the “ Body Worlds ” exhibition , in which dissected people are shown.
In an interview with Der Spiegel , sociology professor Barbara Krahé described the video as an important contribution to raising awareness of sexual assault in some. It is also a combative sign that one is not ready to tolerate such behavior any longer.
Controversy about Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf
After the video was broadcast, an incident from 2012 was discussed in which Joko Winterscheidt physically attacked a trade fair hostess at the IFA in a video on the ZDF program Neo Paradise at the request of Heufer-Umlauf, by touching her on the chest and grabbed the bum. According to ZDF, the movements were only hinted at. Heufer-Umlauf commented on the attack with the words: “She really was there and felt really degraded. She's going home right now and then she'll start crying in the shower, she'll be in the shower for six hours! ”In October 2012, Joko and Klaas apologized for the incident. One must remember the incident, wrote Alice Bota in Die Zeit . “Because even those who give the good guys today weren't always the good guys. Because sexual assault as TV entertainment is not a dusty TV program from the 50s, but rather topical. ”In his Baywatch Berlin podcast , Klaas Heufer-Umlauf commented on the criticism. He had "made stupid jokes himself" - even those that he judged in retrospect as "stupid and hurtful". "You feel ashamed of yourself," said Heufer-Umlauf.
