Christian Neef (born January 27, 1952 in Perleberg ) is a German journalist and non-fiction author .

Neef studied from 1972 to 1979 at the University of Leipzig , where he in 1980 with a thesis on the problems of differentiation in the foreign policy reporting, the SED press to Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate. From 1979 to 1990 he worked as a foreign policy journalist for the radio, for which he went to Moscow as a correspondent in 1983. There he switched to the news magazine Der Spiegel in April 1991 , for which he remained in Russia as a correspondent for another five years. In 1996 Neef went to the Hamburg editorial office of the magazine, where he worked in the international department. From 2003 to 2012 he was deputy head of the international department at Spiegel, then he became the author of the paper. From 2014 to 2017 he worked again as a correspondent in Moscow. His focus areas are reporting from Russia and the other former republics of the Soviet Union, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. He has also been touring Afghanistan regularly since 1987. He is considered an expert on the Ukraine conflict .

Neef published several books on the politics and history of Russia.
