Hans Strunden ( Gelsenkirchen April 6, 1926 - July 29, 2008 in Essen ) was a German dentist and non-fiction author with a focus on parrot birds .

Life

He graduated from the Adolf-Hitler-Gymnasium Gelsenkirchen . From February 1943, pupils born between 1926 and 1928 were obliged to serve as air force helpers. Sometimes the lessons - if they take place - are also relocated directly to the flak positions. During the Second World War he was with the mountain troops . After the war, Strunden studied dentistry in Münster. He received his dental license in 1951/52. In 1953 he did his doctorate there with a thesis on the focal test method with penicillin . After graduating, he settled as a dentist in his hometown of Gelsenkirchen.

Since his school days he has been an active rowing athlete at the Gelsenkirchen 1920 e. V. (RVG) and its chairman from 1956 to 1958. As a rowing athlete and as an alpine winter athlete, he took part in German youth championships with numerous victories.

His humorous non-fiction book Dentists Are Also People , published in 1960, was reprinted in extracts in the Rheinisches Zahnärzteblatt in the 1990s . The illustrations came from Olaf Lübcke, who also received his doctorate in dentistry in Münster in 1953.

In 1977 Strunden traveled to Indonesia for the first time, especially to see parrots in their natural habitats. He also got an impression of the endangerment of the species. Further trips to the parrots' homelands followed.

In addition to travel reports and species protection, Strunden's non-fiction books and articles on parrots, which have been published since the mid-1980s, focus on the history of parrot keeping and parrot studies. They first appeared in the Feathered World . In 1986 he published an article together with Thomas Arndt , ZGAP chairman Roland Wirth and second ZGAP chairman Anton Sojer: No chance for the Spix's macaw ? . The extinction of the species in the field was to be expected at this time, in the field only 3 animals existed. Later, in the magazine Parageien founded in 1988 , which was first published by Horst Müller-Verlag and later by Arndt-Verlag , he published 61 articles between 1988 and 2003. At times he worked as an editor for the specialist journal Parrotien .

In 1998, his commitment to the protection of species led to the establishment of the Strunden Parrot Foundation (see below). Strunden died on July 29, 2008 at the age of 82 after a long and serious illness. Between 2000 and 2004 he published articles on bird motifs on coins, some of which were ancient, for the sheets of the Naumann Museum.
