Christian Krug (born December 19, 1965 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist . From October 2014 to December 2018 he was editor-in-chief of Stern magazine , before that he was editor-in-chief of the Illustrierte Gala (both products from Gruner + Jahr ). Since the beginning of 2019 he has been involved in the development of new business areas at Gruner + Jahr.

Life

Christian Krug is the son of the former HSV football player and later journalist Gerd Krug . His mother was deputy editor-in-chief of the women's magazine Brigitte . His brother Matthias Krug is a picture editor for the news magazine Der Spiegel . Both stepmothers are the journalist Birgit Lahann .

After graduating from the Peter-Petersen-Schule in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel , Christian Krug first traveled around the world on a motorcycle and then did an apprenticeship as an advertising clerk in Frankfurt am Main . He then studied political science at the University of Hamburg . From 1989 onwards, alongside his studies, he also worked as a journalist, initially as a reporter for the Hamburger Morgenpost ; after completing his intermediate diploma, Herbert Riehl-Heyse took him on as a cultural correspondent for Stern in Munich, and finally became head of the department.

From 1996 he was head of editorial office at Spiegel TV and head of digital newspapers at Spiegel-Verlag , poached by Stefan Aust .

In 1998, the then editor-in-chief Werner Funk brought him back to Stern and made him head of the Germany II division.

From 2000 to 2008, Krug was, among other things, co-editor-in-chief of the Max magazine (Milchstraße publishing group, part of Hubert Burda Media). In 2008 he founded the media consulting agency Krugmedia (with clients including Jung von Matt , Stefan Aust and Gruner + Jahr). From the beginning of 2011 to the beginning of 2013 he was editor-in-chief of the Lufthansa magazine and also worked as editorial director at Gruner + Jahr Corporate Editors. From October 2012 to September 2014 he was editor-in-chief of the Gala as the successor to the long-standing post holder Peter Lewandowski . On October 1, 2014, Krug was brought to the chair of Stern editor-in-chief after his predecessor Dominik Wichmann was criticized for his leadership style.

Christian Krug is the editor or author of several books, including a biography of the Hollywood actor Steve McQueen with Barbara McQueen . Together with his second wife Ina, he leases a hotel in Marrakech / Morocco. He has two sons from his first marriage. He lives in Hamburg-Winterhude .
