Life

Born in Hamburg-Blankenese in 1947, the life of Volker Hinz was determined by photography from an early age. At the age of 20 he was already selling his first pictures to newspapers, at 24 he became head of the “Sven Simon Bild Agentur” in Bonn until he came to Stern in Hamburg in 1974 . In 1978 he moved to New York City as a freelance photographer . It was there that many of his large reports, portraits and travel photographs were taken, which made him known across national borders. Since 1986 the man from Hamburg has been working from his hometown again.

Volker Hinz became known in the early 1970s with reports from the German political scene. Commissions for the star gave him opportunities for gripping photo documentaries such as New York nightlife, Hollywood and Mexico, for which he received the World Press Award and membership in the most important photography associations.

reception

Der Stern: “Hinz has been working for Stern for thirty years - almost eight of them based in New York. He has illustrated countless reports for Stern over the past three decades. Muhammad Ali , Woody Allen , Helmut Schmidt , to name just a few of the many world-famous personalities he has accompanied with his camera. His photo of Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer is legendary . … ““ Hinz 'photographs have decisively shaped the look of the Stern. The focus of his work has always been on the human being as a motif and the human being as the language of images. ”(By David Scherf) Volker Hinz Exhibition 2008

The star: “The photographer Volker Hinz is… a contemporary painter. The contemporary painter among the great photographers, to be precise. For decades, the photographer Volker Hinz has been portraying the famous and powerful of this world for Stern. Now he himself is the center of attention (by: Ulrike Posche ) congratulates on his 60th birthday. "

Der Stern: “The photographer Volker Hinz has been working for the Stern for almost three decades. His reports from all over the world, his picture stories and, above all, his black and white portraits of international personalities justify his outstanding position as a photographer and have strongly shaped the appearance of the magazine. The star photographer Volker Hinz is presenting a selection of his works in a photo exhibition for the first time, including portraits of famous personalities. "

Artist talk Volker Hinz with Ulrich Rüter, Gruner + Jahr Pressehaus: “For almost forty years now, Volker Hinz has played a decisive role in shaping the visual appearance of Stern magazine. There is hardly a magazine without his confident portraits of celebrities from all over the world. Now the publishing house Gruner + Jahr is honoring him with an exhibition and with the latest volume in the Stern Photography Portfolios series. 'Turning photos into experiences is the art and craft of Volker Hinz.' What distinguishes him are 'velvet gloves and hawk eyes'. "(Jochen Siemens)

Volker Hinz was one of the most prominent portrait photographers in the German press landscape and one of his special abilities was to add new aspects to the portraits of famous - sometimes notorious - contemporaries from the fields of politics, film, literature, sport and fashion, beyond the familiar clichés. The naked footballers Beckenbauer and Pelé in the shower or Woody Allen , who forbids himself to speak, Kate Moss with golden feet: It is not pictures, but stories that Volker Hinz tells with a single camera view.
