Tanjev Schultz (born May 13, 1974 in Berlin ) is a German university professor , journalist and publicist . The former editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung has been Professor of Journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since 2016 . His main topics include the quality and ethics of journalism. He has also come to the fore through books and interviews about right-wing extremism and the German security authorities.

Life

Schultz obtained his Abitur at the Thomas Mann School in Lübeck, then after his community service he studied philosophy , psychology , communication science , political science and German at the Free University of Berlin , the FernUniversität in Hagen and the Indiana University Bloomington and was at the University of Bremen in political science with the dissertation Geschwätz oder Discurs? The rationality of political talk shows on television for Dr. rer. pole. PhD. At the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies at the University of Bremen, he worked as a research assistant for four years. a. participates in a study funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the identities of Turkish immigrants. Schultz worked in the work area of ​​the sociologist Bernhard Peters . He has published articles in various specialist journals, including the Zeitschrift für Soziologie , der Journalistik and the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.

During and after his studies, Schultz worked as a freelance journalist and intern a. a. for the Spiegel , the Tagesspiegel and the WDR . From 2005 he was editor, responsible for education and university policy, at the Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as co-editor of the series “Pedagogical Policies” and author of several books, among others. a. on the Guttenberg plagiarism affair . Together with his colleague Roland Preuss, he was the first to write about the plagiarism in the doctoral thesis of the then Federal Defense Minister Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg and thus triggered his plagiarism affair. As an educational policy editor, Schultz reported in numerous articles a. a. about the Pisa studies and about cases of abuse at the Odenwald School .

From 2012 onwards, Schultz reported for the Süddeutsche Zeitung mainly on internal security issues, above all on the terrorism of the " National Socialist Underground " (NSU). He accompanied the NSU investigative committees in the Bundestag and the state parliaments and reported regularly on the NSU trial at the Munich Higher Regional Court. With Annette Ramelsberger , Wiebke Ramm and Rainer Stadler, Schultz was part of a team that published protocols in SZ-Magazin for every year of the NSU trial . The team also documented the NSU trial in book form on more than 2000 pages, published by the Kunstmann- Verlag and the Federal Agency for Civic Education .

Schultz worked closely with the online editorial team and the investigative department at SZ and was involved in research projects and series, including the work of the secret services ( secret war ) and work on Swiss leaks .

Schultz accepted a call for a regular professorship at the journalism seminar at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he has been researching and teaching since February 2016. With a research team, he regularly publishes data on the trust of the population in the media. Schultz is one of the founders and co-editors of the journal Journalistik (Journalism Research). He also works as an author of journalistic articles and books. He is a member of the jury of the German Journalist Award and of the Medium Magazin jury for the “Journalists of the Year”.

Together with the journalist Frederik Obermaier , he published a book about the Ku Klux Klan in Germany in 2017, and in 2018 Schultz's overall presentation of the right-wing extremist terror group National Socialist Underground (NSU) appeared. In the press and radio he gave numerous interviews on these topics and in general on right-wing extremism and the German security authorities, etc. a. at Kulturzeit (3Sat) and on Deutschlandfunk . In 2019, he contributed to an anthology about right-wing extremist activities in the security apparatus. In cooperation with the University of Oxford , Schultz also published a study in 2019 on how newsrooms are looking for journalistic talent.
