Live and act

Iwersen is the son of a painter and a children's nurse. In 1984 he began to work as a newspaper boy for the Hamburger Abendblatt . In mid-1987 he went to the USA for a student exchange year . After his return he worked alongside school for the scientific publishing house Dr. Kovač in Hamburg. Iwersen is married and has two sons.

Iwersen began his journalistic career in the sports department. He has mainly written articles on basketball for the German, British and US media . Before he was admitted to the Axel Springer School of Journalism in 2000 , he wrote about sports and business topics for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Berliner Zeitung and other media. In 2002 he became a business editor at the Stuttgarter Zeitung . In Stuttgart he was responsible for the consumer goods industry. With numerous exclusive stories, he described the decline of the Salamander shoe company . His background reports on the mini locomotive manufacturer Märklin and the constant changes in the board of directors at the robot manufacturer IWKA attracted nationwide attention .

In 2006 Iwersen moved to the Handelsblatt. In 2014 he took over the editor-in-chief of the Handelsblatt Live App with 15 editors in Germany, the USA and Japan. Handelsblatt Live was later integrated into the overall editorial team. Since 2012, Iwersen has headed the investigative department he set up, which under his leadership has developed into an important corrective in the German media landscape and has received numerous awards.

Iwersen reported on spectacular cases like in 2010 together with his Handelsblatt colleague Jürgen Flauger about the Teldafax scandal and in 2011 about the sex party scandal in the insurance group Ergo . He also researched and reported on sales payments from Debeka insurance to so-called tipsters in the civil service. He also reported on the subsidy scandal surrounding the German solar manufacturer Q-Cells, a committee of inquiry was then set up in Saxony-Anhalt in this matter.

In 2015 the financial investor Peter Löw tried in vain to arrest Iwersen for reporting on Löw's insider trading. In 2016, Iwersen revealed unknown details about Edward Snowden's escape route . For this report he received the Kurt Tucholsky Prize for literary journalism .

Iwersen also wrote numerous reports on the Cum-Ex tax-saving model. He and his colleagues were awarded the Hugo Junkers Prize in 2018 for his report on an Airbus armaments business .

Iwersen reported on numerous other dubious machinations and cases of national and international white-collar crime as well as affairs and scandals in finance, banking and the insurance industry. He has been honored many times, including as business journalist of the year 2011, with the Henri Nannen Prize 2013 and three Guardian Awards . Iwersen also received the Kurt Tucholsky Prize for literary journalism in 2017.

Trivia

Together with his colleague Felix Holtermann , Iwersen received the German Journalist Award 2019 in the asset management category for the article "Chaos in the crypto realm". On the basis of intensive research, the processes and backgrounds in the Envion scandal should have been presented transparently in an exemplary manner. The article references the coverage of Envion originally published in May 2018 as true. In a press release about a presumed overproduction of EVN tokens, Envion AG referred to the Handelsblatt reporting, as well as a presumed report by the Blockchain Intelligence Group , which should prove the guilt of the Envion founding team.

In December 2019, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung found incorrect conclusions in the original reporting. The Blockchain Intelligence Group distanced itself from information provided by Envion AG on its own website. In addition, the regional court and the Berlin Higher Regional Court held that no illegal tokens were produced at the ICO.
