Kurt Kister

Kurt Kister (born July 9, 1957 in Dachau ) is a German journalist . From 2011 to 2020 he was editor- in- chief at the Süddeutsche Zeitung , which is published in Munich , and from 2015 together with Wolfgang Krach as an equal double head.

Life

After graduating from high school at Josef-Effner-Gymnasium (1976) and doing military service, which he completed with the rank of lieutenant , Kister studied history, politics and communication science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1978 and attended the 17th editorial department at the German School of Journalism . He wrote his diploma thesis in 1983 on security policy and journalism . During his studies, Kister worked as a freelancer for the Dachau local editorial team of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, for news agencies and the Tagesschau .

From May 1983, Kister wrote about security and defense policy as a reporter for the domestic affairs department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He worked on the story of his grandfather, who was a concentration camp guard in Dachau , as a journalist . In 1989 he moved to page three , initially as deputy head of department and later as department head. From summer 1991 to 1996 Kister reported as America - correspondent of Süddeutsche Zeitung from Washington . In 1996 he returned to Munich and became head of the foreign policy department. In August 1998 he switched back to domestic politics and headed the capital city editorial office in Bonn , and from August 1999 to December 2004 in Berlin . On January 1, 2005, Kister became deputy editor-in-chief of the Süddeutsche Zeitung alongside Ernst Fischer . On January 1, 2011, Kister succeeded Hans Werner Kilz as editor-in-chief of the newspaper. From 2015, Kister held his position as editor-in-chief in the form of a double-headed position on an equal footing with the former deputy editor-in-chief Wolfgang Krach . In March 2020 it was announced that he was leaving the editor-in-chief at his own request in mid-July; he remains a member of the editorial team as an author. He was followed by Judith Wittwer as co-editor-in-chief .
