Dieter Schröder (born February 23, 1931 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , publicist and author . For many years he was editor -in- chief of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and publisher of the Berliner Zeitung .

Life

After graduating from high school in East Berlin , Schröder moved to Munich , where he attended the first school for journalistic practice in the Federal Republic of Germany , the Werner Friedmann Institute . He then worked as a local editor for the Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) . But Schröder, who was only 21 years old, soon left Munich to continue his journalistic career in what was then the provisional capital of Bonn . In 1953 he became a Bonn correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and held this position until 1963. With his reports he became a chronicler of the founding years of the Federal Republic of Germany under Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer .

In 1964 Schröder switched to the Hamburg news magazine Der Spiegel for two years as a reporter , for which he mainly wrote international reports . The founder of the mirror , Rudolf Augstein , who was very much admired by Schröder and about whom he wrote a biography in 2004, was partly his teacher from 1964–1965. In 1966 Schröder returned to the Süddeutsche Zeitung and reported from London as SZ correspondent until 1972 .

In 1973 Schröder took over the management of the foreign policy department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich. In 1976 he became a member of the SZ editorial team. As a proponent of Helmut Schmidt's policy and subsequently of Helmut Kohl with regard to retrofitting , he came under considerable pressure from the German public. From 1985 to 1995, Schröder was the sole editor-in-chief of the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Although he was now 65 years old, in 1996 he accepted Gruner + Jahr's offer to become editor of the Berliner Zeitung . Even after his departure as editor in 2001, he stayed with the newspaper as an editorial and permanent author.

Quotes

Martin E. Süskind on the 70th birthday of Dieter Schröder: As an observer and spontaneous commentator on politics - the political, that is: the public affairs are his profession - he reacts extremely emotionally, in the writing analysis and evaluation of politics, however, he moves with it great rationality and self-control. That's what made him a great journalist.

Zeit editor-in-chief Josef Joffe on the occasion of Schröder's retirement: There are only a few journalists who can be said without exaggeration that they played a key role in shaping the German press landscape after the war. Dieter Schröder is one of them.
