Wolfgang Krach (born June 5, 1963 in Regensburg ) is a German journalist and editor-in-chief with equal rights since April 1, 2015 , first with Kurt Kister , and since July 2020 with Judith Wittwer , at the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich .

After graduating from high school in Hilpoltstein in 1982 and then doing community service, Wolfgang Krach completed an editorial traineeship at the Donaukurier in Ingolstadt from 1984 to 1986 . He then worked for a year as a local editor and town hall reporter for the newspaper. From 1987 to 1989 he studied philosophy at the University of Philosophy in Munich , then from 1989 to 1992 he was the state political correspondent for the Donaukurier in Munich. According to the speculation of the news magazine Der Spiegel , he was dismissed after critical reporting in 1992 under pressure from the then Bavarian Prime Minister Max Streibl . Then Krach became a political reporter for the magazine Stern . Krach switched to Spiegel in 1997 . After the government moved to Berlin , Krach became deputy head of the Spiegel office in Berlin. He then took over the management of the Germany department at Spiegel headquarters in Hamburg.

In 2003 Krach became the managing editor and head of the newly created news desk at the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich. On June 1, 2007 he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief of the SZ. From 2011 he formed the editor-in-chief of the newspaper together with Kurt Kister and Heribert Prantl . The editorial board of the Süddeutsche Zeitung appointed Krach as editor-in-chief with equal rights alongside Kister with effect from April 1, 2015. Since July 2020 he has been managing editor-in-chief together with Judith Wittwer , whereby the previously separate responsibilities for print and online were no longer applicable.
