The Evarts- class was a series of destroyer escorts built for the United States Navy during World War II .

history

The class consisted of 65 escort destroyers (US Navy identification: DE = Destroyer Escort). In terms of their size, these ships are more comparable to corvettes , but in the American naming scheme they were among the "small" destroyers. These units were built between 1942 and 1944. They served as escorts for convoys during World War II and were mainly used for submarine hunting , but also for aircraft defense.

The lead ship of this class was the Evarts , which was launched on December 17, 1942 and put into service on April 15, 1943. The Evarts- class ships had diesel-electric propulsion , with the four diesel engines connected to generators that provided power for electric motors that in turn powered the propeller shafts. The intended driving range was 5,000 nm at 15 kn and 6,000 nm at 12 kn. In use, however, the fuel supply of 197 t was only sufficient for 4,150 nm at a speed of 15 kn.

The ships and their components were prefabricated in various factories and then assembled in the shipyard. A total of 65 Evarts- class ships were delivered to the United States Navy. The ships were built in series, with these being delivered to the US Navy in blocks. The following table illustrates this procedure.

32 units of this class were handed over to the Royal Navy , where they were classified as frigates and named after captains' names from the Napoleonic War. Hence this class was named Captain class in the Royal Navy , along with another 46 Buckley- class units . The British units were returned to the United States after the war ended. The Royal Navy had lost five units in the war, mostly to submarines ( Gould , Lawford , Blackwood , Capel and Goodall ), two more units were brought in after serious damage, but were never repaired and were scrapped. The remaining ships made available to the British were mostly scrapped after their return.
