Wolfgang Kaes (* 1958 in Mayen , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German journalist and writer .

Life

After studying political science , cultural anthropology and education at the University of Bonn , Kaes initially worked as a freelance police reporter for the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger . He also wrote reports for Stern , the Deutsche Allgemeine Sonntagsblatt and other publications. He was head of the Bonn office of the Koblenzer Rhein-Zeitung and head of text and chief reporter of the Mainzer Rhein-Zeitung. He then moved to the Bonner General-Anzeiger , where he still works as an editor and chief reporter today.

Writing work

His first crime novel Todfreunde , which deals with child abuse and the blood scandal, was published in 2004 by Rowohlt Verlag . His thriller The Chain , also published by Rowohlt in 2005 , is about the political consequences of September 11, 2001, his third novel Herbstjagd deals with the topic of stalking and the isolation of modern city dwellers. In 2008, Rowohlt published his novel Das Feuermal , then Kaes changed the publisher. In 2010 C. Bertelsmann published his novel Bitter Lemon . This is a political thriller that has the global slave trade as its main theme.

Journalistic work

Kaes became known nationwide in 2012 when he made a significant contribution to the investigation of the murder of Trudel Ulmen through meticulous research. Ms. Ulmen disappeared without a trace in March 1996. The perpetrator was the murdered woman's husband; In December 2012, the Bonn Regional Court sentenced him to 11 years in prison for manslaughter.

He uncovered serious deficiencies in police operations and investigative work in several other cases.

Since the late 1980s, he has been researching Paul Schäfer and his Colonia Dignidad . His contributions to the entanglement of German government circles also appeared in the period .

Awards

In 2012 Kaes received the Lighthouse Prize for his research in the Trudel Ulmen case and in 2013 the Henri Nannen Prize for "Best Investigative Achievement".

In addition, he received the 2012 Journalist Prize from the Association of Taxpayers in North Rhine-Westphalia for his exposure of the questionable tax practices of the Cologne-Düsseldorf Rhine Shipping (KD).
