Maren-Kea Freese (born April 24, 1960 in Hanover ) is a German film director and screenwriter for feature and documentary films who lives in Berlin.

Life

Maren-Kea Freese spent her childhood and youth in Hamburg , Curacao , Ingolstadt and Cologne . She completed her studies in film studies , journalism and German at the Free University of Berlin . At the same time, she made short films independently (director, script, camera, editing) and cinematically told about life in the big city. She also worked as an assistant director to George Tabori , Rosa von Praunheim and at the Aachen Theater . She then studied directing and scriptwriting at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin . Her graduation film "Zoe" (1999) is the portrait of an angry girl on the run - until her past catches up with her. “Zoe” was shown in the Forum of the Berlinale 2000, at the Moscow International Film Festival, in Gothenburg and at the Lodz International Film Festival. At the Munich Film Festival, “Zoe” received the Director's Prize for German Film.

Her second feature film “What I know about her” (2005), in which Thomas Jonigk was a co-author, was shown in Gothenburg. In addition, she produced documentary works (TV, radio), supported by the 2009 Otto Brenner Prize / Research Grant.
