Fritz Schaap

Fritz Schaap (* 1981 in Berlin ) is a German journalist and author.

Life

Fritz Schaap graduated from the Robert-Blum-Gymnasium in Berlin in 2001 . He studied literature, journalism and Islamic studies in Berlin, Leipzig, Damascus and Alexandria.

After graduating, he reported from the Middle East as a freelance reporter for the Berliner Zeitung and Zeitmagazin . In 2012 he moved to Beirut, where he worked as a correspondent for the Zeitenspiegel agency until 2015.

Since November 2019 he has been the Africa correspondent for the news magazine Der Spiegel .

  • In 2017 Schaap received the Otto Brenner Prize for his Syria coverage in Spiegel magazine .
  • In 2017 he was awarded the Prix Ouest-France - Jean Marin (Presse écrite) for the same Syria reporting in France at the Prix Bayeux-Calvados des correspondants de guerre.
  • 2017 Prix Bayeux-Calvados des correspondants de guerre, 2nd prize of the Jury International for reporting on Syria in the Spiegel
