In 1971, he put the exam a diploma in economics (social science direction) in Cologne from 1978 he was at the University of Oldenburg Dr. rer. pole. PhD .

From 1970 to 1977 Adam worked as a scientific consultant at the Economic and Social Science Institute of the German Trade Union Federation (WSI) in Düsseldorf , after which he worked until 1984 as a responsible editor at Bund-Verlag in Cologne . From 1984 to 2011 he was a speaker at the German Savings Banks and Giro Association .

Adam has been teaching at various universities since 1978 and was made honorary professor at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf in 1992. In 2004 he was appointed honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin .

As early as the 1970s, Adam wrote several introductory economics textbooks that were widely used beyond the narrow academic field. At the time, this earned him the reputation of being a “successful author of the DGB Institute of Economics and Social Sciences (WSI)”. Its strength is seen in its clear positioning. Long before the gap between rich and poor became a topic in all the media, Adam criticized the social market economy in his basic work "Economic Policy and Government System of the Federal Republic of Germany" because it embodied the core ideas of an even distribution of wealth and also in the area the economy democratized society have not yet realized. With his last textbook on “Tax Policy in 60 Minutes”, Adam not only brings the difficult subject of tax policy to a broad readership, but also promotes understanding for politics, which is exposed to an extremely complex decision-making process in this policy area.

In the monthly magazine OXI he regularly explains terms relating to the ABC of business.
